John and Rachel Cole Dine had 14 children. John was born and raised in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Before his 17th birthday he served as a Minute Man in 1779. He fought in the Battle of Springfield, New Jersey in 1780. A detailed account of the fight is on record at the Court of Common Please October Term 1836 in Butler County, Ohio. Rachel was born in South Carolina. They lived in Mercer County, Kentucky for five years, then moved near Middletown, Butler County, Ohio in 1805. Three of their sone, John Jr., Peter, and Cornelius married in Ohio then moved to Decatur County, Indiana in 1820. Peter and Cornelius moved on to Hensley Township, Johnson County, Indiana a year later Cornelius and family moved to Hamblen Township, Brown County, in 1822 on 33 acres he farmed. This information was recorded in the Brown County History published in 1990.

What happened to Benoni S. ROBERTS, born ca 1830-32 (son of William S. Roberts and Sarah ---)? He lived in Brown Co IN from 1837 until at least the 1900 census, when he is living with daughter Sarah Isabel and son-in-law Levi Shipley in Brown Co., IN. (they had married 8 Aug 1890 Brown Co IN). I cannot find him in the 1910 census. No civil record of his death in Brown Co or surrounding counties. Sarah and Levi had 13 children. Do any Shipley descendants know what happened to Benoni?
Dines listed in the Hamblen Twp., Brown County, Indiana, Enumeration for year 1889 were:
Samuel, age 57
James M., age 29
Peter Sr., age 57
Peter Sr.., age 79
Simon Peter, age 27
The enumeration for all males over the age of 21 was certified on May 16, 1889.
I am not sure why two Peters are listed as Srs. Perhaps was a mistake on the part of the trustee.
I thought this might be of interest, perhaps help, for those searching for their Dine ancestors.
Nancy
For whatever this is worth, take a look at the 1850 census entry
(Ancestry.com) for Rachel Dine, Madison, Butler, OH, born 1775 in South
Carolina. She is living with other Dines, at least one of which could have
been a younger son.
I opined that Cornelius' father must have been born 1770-1780 to have
produced a son in 1801. I checked Cornelius in the 1850 census (Brown Co
IN) and noted that he was living in Ohio when son Peter was born
(mid-1830's). It may be a stretch, but perhaps when Cornelius moved to Ohio
he took his folks along and in 1850 Rachel survived, living with another
son. Good luck.

Who are Cornelius Dine 's parents ? On the 1880 census he states that his father was born in Germany. He states that his mother was born in North Carolina. Does anyone know anything about his parents?

COUNTY OF DOUGLAS, ILLINOIS, HISTORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL – With an outline sketch of the Northwest Territory and of the State of Illinois, Illustrated, Chicago, F. A. Battey & Co., Publishers, 1884 (reprinted by Unigraphics, Evansville, Indiana, 1976.) Biographical Sketches of Bowdre Township – page 530.
“ANDREW J. DUFFLE, farmer, is one of the foremost men of Douglas County; a keen trader, with good judgment and executive ability. He started in life with nothing, and has gained his large property unaided. He is a native of Brown County, Ind., and was born March 3, 1840. At six years of age, on the death of his father, he was thrown upon his own resources and was variously employed in families until about ten years old, when he went to live with David Hurley, of Brown County, with whom he remained six years. Then for two years he worked by the month, saving his earnings, and at twenty bought two teams, hired a man by the year, and started overland for the West, but, owing to an accident, made a temporary stay (which proved to be a permanent one), in 1860, in Douglas County. He first rented eighty acres of land on the present site of Hindsboro, four years; during this time, he speculated in hogs and mules, aside from farming, and though losing heavily on the hogs, was!
enabled to buy his first forty acres of land of the railroad, principally on credit. To this he has continually added till now he owns a fine farm of 320 acres, the principal part of which was raw prairie at the time of purchase. His two-story residence, with orchard, and other surrounding improvements, in located on a knoll, at the junction of cross roads, and presents a pleasant appearance. The farm itself, and all the improvements, have been made by industry and economy. He is a practical business man, just in dealing, and has many warm friends. April 14, 1865, he married Miss Mary J. Ziglar, of Douglas County; she is a member of the Christian Church, and a devoted loving wife and mother. They have seven children – Susa, Nellie, Emma, Clara, Duzzie, William C. and Herman. Politically, Mr. Duffle is a Democrat, and he is also a Mason.”

Arlene - Just came across you inquiry, dated Aug 2005, regarding Enoch and Nancy Davis. Have you been able to find any info regarding their death or burial places?
That same 1870 census also list their oldest son, Robert, and his family, also, their oldest daughter, Martha Ann, and her family. Martha and Thomas Harsha Cochran are my ggrandparents. Enoch and family were in Hancock County, WV on the 1860 census. Also, am looking for any info on Enoch's parents/siblings and same for Nancy (Cunningham).
