Surname: Shipley
-------------------------
My grandfather was the son of a later "Issac Shipley", whom we believe
to have been born in either Jackson Co.,IN or Johnson Co.,IN. His date
of birth is also not clearly known. However, this Issac was married three
times and fathered 13 children. His last wife was named Mary(and was believed
to be partially [one-half]Cherokee),they were my grandfather Pat Shipley's
parents. They lived in the middle of nowhere in Brown Co., most if not
all of the children of my great-grandfather were born on this farm. My
grandfather was born in 1912.
For those just starting to search the Shipley line, there is something
that you should know that may not be common knowledge, but can be exteremly
confusing. It was a tradition for the father named "Issac" to name his
son "Jesse", and for the son "Jesse" to name his son "Issac". Also, alot
of the Issac's were also known as "Ike", and many of the male children
were not given a middle name.(i.e. my grandfather's name was Pat Shipley)
There is an old cemetary in Brown County, known as the old Shipley cemetary.
It is still accessible, and many of the ancesters are buried there. There
is also another cemetary in Brown County where quite a few Shipley's are
buried. Both cemetaries are accessible, but good directions are a must
to get to the old one.
And lastly, there is a book available concerning the geneology of the Shipley
clan.
I hope that this helps out whomever my be in need.
