Does anyone know if there was a Brown County History Book compiled in the late 1980's or 1990's? If so are there copies still available for purchase? If not, is there a way I can get a copy of the biography section of the book?
Thanks for any help from you out there. Helen Whannel helenjwh(a)dwx.com
Hello,
Isaac Shipley was born Aug. 6, 1870, however, some records show Aug. 26,
1872. He was the son of Jesse W. Shipley and one of three wives,
Sylvania Ann Crider. Siblings were *Catherine, born Sept. 24, 1863, *Mary
(Polly), born Dec. 3, 1866, *Levi, born Sept. 10, 1868, died 1946, buried
in Bridgeport Cemetery. *Ellender, born April 23, 1872. Some records show
April 3, 1871, *James Jacob (Jake), born April 6, 1875, *Charles, born Jan
1, 1876, *Nora, born Dec. 20, 1877, *Florence Ninerva, born June 25, 1879
and *Jesse W. Jr., born May 8, 1881.
The earliest we find Isaac was on a tax list in Knox County, Kentucky in
1818. He owned two horses valued at $40.00. Next, we find Isaac in 1830
in Salt Creek Township in Jackson County, Indiana. Brown County was not
created until 1836. He didn't move, but the county lines changed. He does
not appear on the 1840 Census and is believed to have died by that time.
Elizabeth was head of the household in Brown County in 1840. Elizabeth was
his widow and I believe that Polly was a nickname and not a surname.
According to Census, as best as can be figured, Isaac and Elizabeth's
children were
*Hiram, born 1811
*Margaret, born 1812
*Jesse, born 1821
*Mary, born 1825
*John, born 1826
*Nelson, born 1828
*Samuel J., born 1834
There may have been other children between Margaret and Jesse because of
the ten year spacing there. Also, Elizabeth may have been a second wife,
but no proof of this.
Isaac died after 1834 and before 1840. Elizabeth raised the family alone.
A trememdous struggle.
By 1860, Elizabeth was living in Bartholomew County, which was also formed
from Jackson and Brown Counties. By the 1870 Census, she was gone. She
probably died by that time.
The Bridgeport Cemetery has many Shipley burials. I believe this cemetery
is in Brown County
There is a Shipley Cemetery in Washington Township in Brown County. Jesse
(Isaac and Elizabeth's son) is buried there. I don't know where Isaac and
Elizabeth are buried. The Shipley Cemetery sounds like a good bet, but I
don't know for sure.
Hope this helps. Good luck..

Surname: Nelson

Dear Shirley,
I have found North Salem Church Cemetery.
Yes it is located in Brown County Indiana, Washington Township.
Location: Situated on the north side of, and adjacent to, State Road 46,
about 1-1/4 miles west of the Brown County/Bartholomew County line.
This small cemetery is in the yard of the North Salem United Methodist
Church. Besides the one inscribed stone there are five or six graves marked
by uninscribed fieldstones.
This is what is on the inscribed grave stone:
Nelson, W.F. - CO. E. 134th IND. INF.
( Civil War Shield Stone )
This information came from the book:
"Brown County, Indiana Cemeteries"
Compiled by Kenneth J. Reeve & Helen H.Reeve
Brown County Historical Society, Inc. Nashville, Indiana.
Second Printing, 1977
Hopefully this information will be of some help to you.
Let me know if there is anything else I can look up for you.
Happy Hunting

Does anyone have information on the death date and place of Elizabeth/Betsy Hall, daughter of Jesse Hall of Brown County, IN who married Hiram Stout, Elihu Brown and a Mr. Walker? I believe she and Elihu lived in Douglas County, MO and raised several children. I believe Hiram Stout was an early settler in Douglas County, MO so Elizabeth/Betsy must have been with him when he came.
Were there Stout children? When did Hiram die and where?
It appears she married a Mr. Walker in Douglas County, MO after Elihu's death. When did Elihu die and where is he buried?
Thanks--all replies are sincerely appreciated. Helen Whannel

Surname: Beavers, Beaver, Barker, Garloch
-------------------------
This is a correction to my Brown County message, dated May 16,2000. My
great grandfather's name was David Beavers. He was married to Eliza (sic.
Louisa) J. Barker Beavers.
Does anyone have the death date of Malinda Hanson Hall? She was born ca. 1820 and was the second wife of Jesse Hall.
She possibly married William Weatherman as her second husband 26 May 1864 in Monroe Co IN. She may possibly be buried in Gilgal Cemetery in Monroe Co, IN.
Can anyone help with her death date and burial place? Thanks. Helen Whannel
