Message Board Post:
I know I am replying to an old post, but I have some information that might be relavent:
My g-grandma (born in 1888) gave me the names Phebe Ann Carr and Smith Silvers as her
maternal grandparents. She listed their children as 1) James Lee 2) Margaret 3) Anna
Eliza, my gg-grandma, 4) Luella and 5) Mary. She gave the names of their spouses and
children as well. She also mentioned that Phebe Ann had a second husband by the name
Gillaspy.
From this info, I have tracked down these ancestors in the census
records, land records, marriage birth and death databases, etc. Here is what I have found
that connect them to the people mentioned in the previous post. A little
"connecting the dots" is required.
James Lee Silvers' obit (died in 1916 in McLean Co., IL) mentions that he was born in
Boone Co., IN (does not list parents names though). He was born in 1839.
The only early Indiana marriage record that comes close to matching up is the William
Silvers and Phebe Carr one from Boone Co. on Sept. 24, 1835.
In the 1840 Census, a William S. Silvers is enumerated in Boone Co., IN with a wife, a
young son and a young daughter.
All of the Silvers children were born in Indiana, the youngest, Mary, was born in 1854.
Phebe and her children are enumerated in the 1856 Iowa state census in High Point Twp,
Decatur Co. She is widowed. They have been living in IA for about 2 yrs. I cannot find a
WPA cemetery record for anybody named William or Smith Silvers in the state of IA
(there's an online database).
There is a land patent for High Point Twp., Decatur Co., IA in the name of William S.
Silvers, filed just one month before the state census was taken. Two other men named
Silvers have land patents in High Point Twp., Decatur Co., IA--they are brothers Jesse and
Thomas Silvers. According to a family tree posted on
FamilySearch.org, these brothers had
an older brother named William Smith Silvers born in 1807 in Pulaski Co., KY. Their
parents were named William Silvers and Sarah (Sally) Smith and they were married in
Pulaski Co., KY.
Phebe Ann Carr and her first husband were both born in KY according to various census
records.
Phebe appears to be the sister (or close relation) of Ananias and James Carr who were both
married in Boone Co. IN in the 1830's. In fact James Carr was married on the same day
by the same minister as Phebe and William. Ananias lived in High Point Twp., Decatur Co.,
IA in the 1880 Census. Ananias' step-son, George Manifee married Anna Eliza Silvers
in 1866. James' and Ananias' parents are Sally Wiley and Nathan Carr and it
appears they had a sister named Margaret whose husband was named William Smith. Sally,
Margaret and William are buried near each other in Sheets Cemetery, Boone Co., IN.
When I put this all together, it appears that my ggg-grandpa was William Smith Silvers,
who was the brother of Jesse and Thomas Silvers. He apparently died in IA in 1856. His
grave may not have a headstone. It has been noted that Trulinger cemetery in High Point
Twp. has 20 unknown graves; there are about 6 other Silvers buried there.
If anyone has any further information to add or comments they are welcome. I can provide
further information many of the people I have mentioned.
