Would appreciate help in discovering whether Robert's daughter, Martha E. Bowen,
(1849-1909) might have been the out-of-wedlock mother of my ancestor Alfred D. Griggs
(1866-1943). The father, John Griggs, lived at Bridgeport, Marion County at the time, and
after serving in civil war he studied law at Danville and taught in public schools in
Marion County and surrounding counties. After hearing of the pregnancy he tried to marry
the mother (maybe Martha) but her parents would not let him near her. He never married
and practiced law in Iowa the rest of his life. I noticed that Martha had a younger
brother named Alfred and later when she married Jeremiah Warren in Clinton County she
named her first son Alfred (Warren) also. She would have been around 17-18 in 1866. The
unknown mother of Alfred Griggs gave him up to his grandfather, Hiram Griggs of Morgan
County, IN to raise. Hiram was a minister and Alfred Griggs also became a minister and is
buried at Brownsburg in Hend!
ricks County. This is just a shot in the dark for an adoption with an unknown mother.
Been researching this for the past 15 years. Thanks
