Hi All,
Just last month FTDNA (
www.familytreedna.com ) offered a Special to all the Y-DNA
participants to enable them to update from the 12 marker to the 25, 37, and 67 markers.
With the help of a lot of Sponsors/ donations we managed to get most of them to do their
25 marker, whilst others updated their 25 and 37 markers to 67 markers. An example of
costs involved the already discounted 12 to 25 marker of $US49.00, was further lowered to
$US35.00. FTDNA tell us that the 12 marker only indicates what DNA haplogroup one belongs
to. It is not until people do their 25 marker that they have a chance of finding their
cousins....assuming the cousin is on the internet with his 25 marker. Apparently an exact
25 marker match with another person indicates that both participants had the exact same
ancestor, sometime after 1066AD, regardless of surname, as back then there were few with a
surname as we know it today. Doing the 37 and 67 markers gives the same ancestor but gives
a better idea o!
f the time frame. My 25 marker match showed three mutations on the 37 marker, and a
further two mutations on the 67 marker. According to the internet DNA scientists this
indicated our exact same ancestor was alive in the 1500s. I expect that if there were no
mutations along the way there is a good chance our ancestor was alive in the 1700s...or
later ?.
Anyhow today I received another Special from FTDNA. This time it is for new participants.
It is only for one test. This is the
. Y-DNA37 mtDNA for $119. (The regular project price is $248 - a reduction of more than
50%!!)
. The promotion will begin on June 9, 2009 and will end on June 24, 2009
Be aware that the Test must be paid for by the end of that period so it would pay to do it
by Credit Card or Paypal. This site has been operating since 2000 and has never had any
problems with the Security of their site when paying by Credit Card.
To understand it a wee bit better the 12 marker test costs $US149.00 but by joining a
surname Project like POWER et al, it costs $US99.00....plus postage of $US4.00 in America
or $US6.00 internationally. So you can see this is an excellent discount for the 37 Y-DNA
marker. On top of that they have thrown in the MtDNA (your mother's DNA) which
normally costs $US89.00 on Project discount, for free.
So, you say, why do I need to do my Y-DNA. Well...back in 2002 I finally acknowledged I
had a brick wall with my Mathew POWER (Master Mariner). He had been born in Waterford,
Ireland in about 1787 according to the BT98s....but Ireland could not give me his birth
Certificate or parents names....nothing! I spent over 100 Euros with the Waterford
Heritage Centre and the Church of Ireland and made no progress at all. Since starting
POWER et al Y-DNA Project and doing my own tests in November 2004 I have found I have
numerous 25 marker matches. Still....I am waiting for that exact 67 marker match to be
sure I have the right family. I do have an Irish gentleman who is a 25 marker match to me
and he has just been updated to his 67 marker....just waiting for the results to come out
next month. Finger crossed eh ?.
If you are interested in joining us go to
www.familytreedna.com and put in the POWER
surname to join us. Or if you feel you need help please contact me at mokurai_power
@yahoo.com and I will try to help you through the process. The POWER et al Project has the
surnames of POER, POWER, POWERS, POOR and POORE. Thank you.
Regards,
Warren C. O. Power.
ps We have one POER to date, whom we have just updated to his 25 marker.
