Walt,
I'm not sure of a good source for information on Michigan Road, but here is
some info that might help you:
I did an article on Old Augusta, Pike Township, Marion County, IN. Michigan
Road runs through Pike Township:
"The main artery of transportation which was the first north-south route (in
the state which ran through Pike Township) was Michigan Road, or State Road
29. According to one source this route was surveyed by George L. Conrad in
1832. Another source states this route begun in 1828, and was completed in
1836. But, regardless of the time frame Michigan Road was started as the road
needed to connect northern Indiana and the state of Michigan with
Indianapolis."
"This route was later the mainstay of the small village of Augusta. Augusta
was considered a stop-over along Michigan Road. An added note of interest,
according to one source, is that this route happened to be in the middle of
Potawatomi lands. Its acquisition divided those lands and weakened the
Potawatomis' hold on the country, meaning the area of the Indian lands."
Most of this information came from Sulgrove's History of Marion County,
Indiana. Sulgrove's history also states that "Michigan road from Indianapolis
to Michigan City.
Hope this helps!
