In searching through the old newspapers I have noticed numerous divorces. In
fact everyone in the town knew why and who were involved. Do you know when the
couple got a divorce?I can check the newspapers if you have a close date.
My email is through excite so I may be off line for a while until I get a new
email address. I think today is the last day- time they are going to be working
since they are in bankruptcy. Good bye everyone! I love you
all....farewell....Oh! I miss my email already! Janet

Hi,
Does anyone have access to a Divorce Index? I'm trying to track the
marriage of Nancy Rogers Crose to Philip (Six) Sicks. They married in
1849, but by 1850 were living apart. In 1851, Philip married again to
Vernelia Vidato. Did this short marriage end in divorce?
Any clues appreciated.
Thanks

Gayle,
I doubt if a divorce index exists. Divorces were granted by different
methods in different (periods of) years in Indiana. I'm not sure I have
all pertinent information, but I can tell you that through 1851, the State
Legislature granted numerous divorces. You would need to look through the
printed sessions laws of the Legislature for the pertinent year. One would
guess the Indiana State Archives would be a good starting point. They
answer emails, but service is slow. The Archives was VERY short-handed,
even prior to the recent State hiring freeze.
As of 1851, the Constitution was changed to prohibit the Legislature from
granting them.
Each county has kept different records of divorces. No county is required
by state law to keep an index of all granted divorces. I don't know if a
Court of Common Pleas existed in Boone Co. If it did, divorces might have
been handled there, and would be found in the indexed ledgers. More
likely, divorces were handled in Superior Court. Unfortunately, that was
started in different counties in different years.
Perhaps someone from Boone Co will know when divorces were turned over to
Circuit (or another) Court.
