Residence of John B. YELTON Partially Destroyed By Fire
About noon Sunday fire broke out in the residence of John B. YELTON, in the south part
of town. The fire, it is thought, started from sparks passing through the crevices of a
defective flue. The eves were soon a blazing mass and for a while it was a matter of
doubt whether the building could be saved. The chemical engine and hose wagon were
taken to the fire as quickly as possible, and the fire was fought with the engine hose
and the buckets. Water was obtained from a cistern, but there was no pump, dipping had
to be resorted to, making the progress against the flames somewhat slow. The chemical
engine contained but one charge and when this gave out, the fire was fought with
buckets while a new supply of chemicals arrived, the engine was set to work and he fire
extinguished by its use.
Almost the whole roof was burned, and the rooms below the second story were more or
less damaged.
Mr. YELTON sustained a loss of about $200, none of which is covered with insurance.

BARN BURNED
The barn of Robert MCCLAIN on the property occupied by Andrew DAVIS, in the north part
of town, was struck by lightening last Friday night and burned to the ground. The
conflangration (sic) started during the heavy down pour of rain, and when the fire was
discovered it was too late to check the work of the flames. The barn contained a horse,
buggy, hay and other feed, the horse and buggy being saved. There was no insurance.
