TELEPHONE ROMANCE
The marriage of Mr. Fred POLAND of Jamestown and Miss Flora MANN of new Brunswick last
Sunday afternoon was the outcome of a pretty little romance that had its beginning last
winter when the groom was night operator of the telephone exchange at Jamestown and the
bride held a similar position with Brunswick telephone Co. The acquaintances formed over
the wires led the young people to spend a good deal of the lonely part of the nights in
friendly talks at first but by-the-by it turned into a genuine sparking. Then Fred took
to
driving out occasionally in that direction on Sunday evenings.
Sunday afternoon, accompanied by a few friends they drove to the home of Rev. PIERCY,
east
of Brunswick, and there were married.
That evening at the home of the grooms parents, Henry and Mrs. POLAND, a reception was
given for the couple, ice cream and cake being served. Those present were the bride and
groem (sic) : his parents and sister, C.D. TAYLOR and wife of New Ross; Wilbur POLAND and
wife of Indianapolis; Lee BUECHLER and wife; Harvey AIRHART , and John POLAND and wife of
Pittsboro. The couple will live at Jamestown while the groom is employed at present in
Robbins livery stable.

J.F. HALL RETIRES
J.F. HALL, who has been in the drug business twenty-one years at Jamestown, has sold his
large stock to Jesse MYERS. The deal was closed up Tuesday morning and Mr. MYERS took
possession at once. The stock was not invoiced, the trade being made for a lump sum. The
purchase price was not given out, but we understand the stock would invoice about $3000.
Mr. HALL first started in the drug business in partnership with Dr. FINCH and John ADAIR
in a room now occupied by MILLER and GARDNERs drug store. For the past seventeen years
he
has been in the business alone. He has always enjoyed the confidence of the people and
has
been patronized liberally. Mr. HALL was compelled to retire on account of failing health.
He has no set plans for the future but will endeavor to regain his health before
undertaking any other business venture.

DIES AT INSANE HOSPITAL
Wm. P. ROSS GOES INSANE AND IS DEAD IN LESS THAN A WEEK
Wm. P. ROSS, a farmer living two and a half miles west of Jamestown on Matt RETTINGOR
farm,
died at the insane hospital at Indianapolis early Wednesday morning to which institution
he
was taken Tuesday from Lebanon. Thursday of last week he began acting extremely queer
and
became worse Friday and Saturday, showing strong tendencies of becoming violent when he
was
taken to Lebanon and placed in Jail till the inquest could be held and arrangements made
for his commitment to the hospital.
He imagined himself to be the richest man in the world and wrote out checks calling for
millions of dollars to almost everybody whom he met. He was going to build a new court
house, the electric line, and a number of other enterprises calling for large sums of
money. After being placed in jail he imagined he was in a bank.
The cause of the trouble is thought to be the result of a fall he received over a year
ago
while putting away hay in the mow. He was working the hayfork when the rope broke and he
fell off the wagon onto his head and sustained injuries to his head, shoulders and neck.
Recently at times he had shown symptoms of insanity but nothing serious was thought of
it.
His remains were brought to New Ross Wednesday and removed to his late residence from
which place his funeral occurred yesterday. He was about forty years of age and leaves a
wife and three children.

An Interesting Relic
John HUBER Finds file of Old Newspapers Printed During Mexican War
While cleaning up some shelving and drawers in his restaurant, Monday, John HUBER of
Jamestown, came across a well preserved file of old papers- The Weekly Union, published
at
Washington, D.C., the oldest one bearing the date 4 December 1847. It is quite an
interesting relic of the earlier days, it being published during the outbreak of the War
with Mexico. The old publication shows a marked difference when compared to later-day
newspapers, in that it is giving solely to pure reading matter, not an advertisement
adorning its pages.
One of the most notable things in this old newspaper is an article on the front page
which
is quite lengthy and is headed: Mr. CLAYs Calumny on the Government and People of the
United States. In this it states that Mr. Henry CLAY, in the first of his resolutions,
had charged the people of this country, through their highest constitutional authorities,
both executive and legislative, with the highest and blackest crime known to the actions
of
governments and nations, when he charges that the War with Mexico is no war of defense,
but
a war of unnecessary and offensive aggression It deals extensively in its delineation of
Mr. CLAYs denunciation of the government and the War with Mexico, and is extremely (sic)
interesting.
It also has communications from the various army commanders who were at the front during
the war, some signed by Generals Sam HOUSTON and Winfield SCOTT. Also descriptions of
battles and skirmishes incident to this war.
This publication was weekly, published every Saturday, and the price two dollars per
year
in advance. It bore the name of Thomas RITCHIE and John P. HEISS as editors and
proprietors.
