Searching for Tilman Smith is complicated by the fact that there were so many people with
that name in the US. I think this might be yours. In the 1850 census for Ind, Monroe
county, Bean Blossom township, there was a family headed by Willis Smith, 50, a farmer,
born in NC, and included Elizabeth, 50, NC, - John, 22, a shoemaker, Tn, - Mary, 22, Tn, -
Lavina, 18, In, - Peter, 16, a farmer, In, - Catherine, 14, In, - Tilman, 12, In, - Sarah,
10, In, - Caleb, 7, In, and William, 5, In. By the 1860 census the family had moved to
Boone county, Perry township, and was again headed by Willis Smith, 60, farmer, born in
NC, and included Elizabeth, 60, NC, - Tillman, 22, farm laborer, born in In as were the
following, - Sarah L, 19, - Caleb, 16, farm laborer, - William, 15, farm laborer, - Jane
Sheffield, 32, born in Tn, - Elizabeth Sheffield, 3, In, and Peter Sheffield, 8/12, In.
Unfortunately, prior to 1880 no family relationships were shown. As I stated previously,
Tilman Smi!
th married Tilathy Chambers in Boone county on 29 Dec 1864, source is book C-4, page 298.
In the 1870 census for Boone county, Perry township, the family was headed by Tilman
Smith, 31, farmer, In, and included Tilatha, 21, keeping house, In, - this next person is
identified by initials only and they could be either WS or US. 3, In, and George W, 1, In.
In the 1880 census the family is headed by Timothy Smith (Tilman?), 47, farmer, born in
Ind as were both parents, and included his wife Telitha, 32, keeping house, born in Ind,
father in Ky and mother in Ind, his son Ulyses, 13, works on farm, In, his son Geroge, 11,
at school, In, his daughter Dora, 9, In, his daughter Amanda, 5, In, and his son Dennis,
2, In. Hope this helps. Don
