The following is taken from the query section of the Indianapolis star.
Cullen, David of Cherry Valley, NY married Abigail Moore. Their son, Matthew David
Culley, was my great grandfather, and his son Matthew Deloro Culley, my grandfather. If
descendants of this family live in Indiana would be glad to correspond:
Culley-David. The Culley family descended from an English family of the same name, who
came from Norman-French Sieur de Cully, a companion of William the Conquerfor, and whose
name is shown on the role of Battel Abby (Battle of Hastings), Matthew David Culley was
born in Lee, Scotland. He was inspector of bleached linen, a position under the crown,
about 1772, at Newsy, County Dane, Ireland and came from that place to America, with his
four sons and two daughters, perhaps three. The sons were John, David, Thomas and
Matthew. One daughter was a Mrs. William Cummings, said to have gone with her husband to
Cincinnati early in 1800. Another daughter was Mrs. David Coventry said to have lived at
Clayerac and Auburn, N.Y. My great-great-grandfather, David Culley, married Abigail Moore
his brother, Matthew Culley, married Mary Moore. The Moore girls were from Cherry Valley,
N.Y. and had been captured by the Indianas, with their mother, when Cherry Valley was
burned in early h!
istory of this place. The Moores descended from the Harper family. Thomas Culley,
married and went into North Carolina or Kentucky. John Culley married a Mrs. Patterson.
His son David Victor or Venango (said to have been named for the county, where he was
born) was one of the early settlers of Indianapolis. (Selgrove, Page 23y, states he was
born in Vernango county, Pennsylvania, near the town of Franklin, son of John and Anne
Sleeper, a Quaker; came to Elizabethtown, KY., with an elder brother in 1818 and made his
home with relatives for a time; joined later by his father's family. In 1823 he
removed to Corydon, Ind.; employed by the State Printer, John Douglas; about 1824 to
Lawrenceburg, Ind. residing there twelve years; married 1825, Mary A. Brown who died Oct
11, 1863. He was appointed in 1836 register of the land office by President VanBuren and
removed to Indianapolis and died there Oct 4, 1869; one son, two daughters.) A sister of
David V. Culley is said to ha!
ve married Isaac Phipps of Indianapolis. Another sister, Betsy, married a relative named
Culley and has a grandaughter somewhere in Indiana. I should like information of Indiana
descendants.
