James L. MYERS, convicted in 1903 of the killing of Branson SLOAN at Darlington
in 1876, and who has served a little over two years in the Michigan City State
Prison, was pardoned by Gov. HANLY and stepped from the prison, Saturday, a free
man. In granting the pardon Gov. HANLEY made the following statement: That Prior
to and since the commission of the crime he was and has been a peaceable, law
abiding citizen that the crime was committed in 1876, the authorities making no
effort even to arrest or prosecute him from that time until 1903; that the act
was done under great provocation, and there is room for reasonable and
substantial doubt as to whether it was not done in strictly self defense, that
the State Board of Pardons, after careful consideration of the facts in the case,
has recommended that said sentence be commuted to two years, and that he be given
his liberty at the end of that period and that the said James L. MYERS has
already served exceeding that time. MYERS wife, whose testimony convicted him,
secured a divorce and married again.
