No, the cemetery exhisted as early as 1831 while the first Mechanicsburg
Church was built in 1840.
It was used for 13 years then another one was built in 1852 and in later
years was used as a post office and then blacksmith shop. The third church
was built in 1880 and used for 32 years. Fourth one built in1912 was
destroyed by fire in 1961. The fifth
church was built on different ground west of the old
church in 1962.

Donnagene,
Thanks for your quick reply. You've told me one thing I didn't know, and
that is Thomas and Alice had a daughter named Emma, which none of us
McMullen/Tatum ancestors knew. The name is not surprising, as Alice had a
sister Emma, who was Emma Tatum Miller Malone. She owned a hat shop in
Lebanon at one time. One of the photos our cousin shared was of Emma in a
fancy hat.
Apparently Alice and Emma's parents, William Asbury Tatum and Rachel
Hendrixson, lived at Mechanicsburg at one time, but that would have been
prior to 1880.
I know Luther McMullen was buried beside his parents and stepmother, as
family members remember it. Also his sister's husband, Henry Swift, took
a
picture of the grave on the day of the funeral. Unfortunately,
stones
have
toppled and the surrounding area is now much overgrown. We were
unable to
get a frame of reference for the graves' location with the photo. We did
find a group of Bluebaughs, who were related to the McMullens by the
marriage of Louetta McMullen to James Bluebaugh. Thomas might have been a
cousin to the three or four Bluebaughs we found buried in the cemetery.
Annie, second wife of Thomas, was buried there according to family
recollection.
I don't know her last name....yet.
We were surprised to find the cemetery so remotely located, not near to
the
Mechanicsburg Christian Church or any other building. Was it
associated
with the church?
Thanks again for adding to our knowledge.
Sharon
