Over the years I have visited Poplar Grove Cemetery in Harrison Twp. several times during my return trips to Boone Co.
On my last visit in particular, an increasing number of headstones seem to be settling badly and some may have suffered from vandalism. (Many other stones do remain in good condition.)
Does anyone know if there has been discussion (perhaps with the township trustee) of possible restoration of the cemetery before the deterioration worsens? It is certainly one of the important pioneer cemeteries in the county.

I'm glad I was subscribed and could read the messages about the Eagle Creek cemetery. We're also interested in learning more about it. We're trying to preserve the history of the Baptist churches which once composed the Danville Association, of which this was apparently the first, and oldest in Boone county.

I think the P.H. Sulivan Museum in Zionsville has info on the Eagle Creek Baptist Cemetery.
Ralph Stacy of Zionsville as Trustee had several of the old cemeteries in Eagle Twp., cleaned up and stones reset.

Hi Becky, I'll never say never, because you never know what may come your way. But at this point looks like we are parked in Bowling Green. LOL..
I do believe the site of the cemetery was also the church at one time. George's stone is one that I have a photo of, it has fallen down. When we read the cemetery back in 1989 there were about 78 stones standing, now I think there is roughly 37. I'll send you an email at and send you the photo of the stone. My Grandson was with us when we went to the cemetery, he was excited when we found it. He said it was like a treasure hunt. We were looking for the only Eggers buried in there. He found it and about jumped up and down. Hope he catches the "bug", someone has to carry the torch.

Thanks Marilyn, last weekend I drove down to the bridge from the west, but just could see anything. There is a little lady at our church. who is 93 and her gg grandfather George Dodson is buried there. Do you know if the site of the church was on that side of the road also ? George Dodson was the first pastor of the church. Thanks again, you have a wealth of information on Boone Co. when are you moving back

Rebecca, I just visited that cemetery over Thanksgiving. It is VERY hard to find since the road to it is closed..you have to take 146th Street (from 421) from Zionsville turn left on 421, go to 975, there will be Hutton Cemetery on the right. Turn LEFT..go to I believe the next cross road...it will say road closed..turn left again..take it all the way to the bridge that is closed..there is a turn around down there..now to get to the cemetery..to the right of the bridge up on the hill..climb up there and its at the top..hard to see from the bottom..terrible shape. I have contacted someone who restores cemeteries about it. They are now restoring Pitzer, so he said he would try to check it out. I took photos of all the stones left standing.

Thank you for your reply. She is Amanda Brown - not Bowen. I erred in putting VA as her birthplace. The two cenus records where I find her has her born in KY. I realize that doesn't fit any better with what you have. The 1900 census has her born Aug 1832.

Hi Garland
I have an Amanda Bowen in my files. However based on 1850 census info from Union County, Ohio, she was born in 1836 in Ohio. Are you confident of the birth date and place? She is in my "Bowens from Maryland-Va-Ohio" line.
I also have "Bowens from Pa/WV" who went through Boone County. But I don't have any Amanda or Melvina listed at this time.

The old cemetery of Eagle Creek Baptist Cemetery is located west of SR 421 on Holliday Road, north of Turkey Foot Road, I think. I can't find the cemetery, does anyone know how to get to it?

I am looking for information about the birth family of Amanda Melvina Brown who was born in VA 13 Aug 1833. She married Henry Coleman Shulse in Lebanon, Boone Co., IN on 22 Oct 1853. They moved to Ralls Co., MO bef. 1858. She died in Ralls Co., MO on 1 Mar 1902. Any information would be appreciated.
