How interesting. I'll see what I can find. I live quite near Whitestown (our phone is Whitestown - mail Zionsville) and there is a Lutheran Cemetery through the field from our house. If it isn't raining (it is supposed to). We will walk over there and look at some of the tombstones tomorrow. They didn't know at the library which Lutheran Church is was associated with. I was surpirsed. I thought it was a township cemetery.
We have volunteered to read and record that cemetery for the Historical Society. It has been read but has not been updated for some time. I'll check out the newspapers too.
We have some neighbors named Saunders who have lived here forever. They have a large family. Unfortunately, the older lady is not well and I don't think I can obtain any information from her. She was the Township Trustee when we first came here.
Is the cemetery in Hamilton County Little Creek or Little Eagle Creek? I am familiar with LIttle Eagle Creek.
Brown County is still pretty rural and is very rugged and beautiful.
Zionsville has grown tremendously since we moved here in 1991. We are still in the coutry but I am not sure for how long.
I had hoped to go out to do some researching on Wednesday or next week, but my daughter reminded me that I have to get my grandson's drapes finished before the new baby arrives so I may have to postpone it for a few days.
I'll do what I can.
This is a new thing I have decided to do. I have had many people on lists that I am on looking for information do very nice things for me. So I will try to do some random acts of kindess for folks here in the local area.

Okay Marjorie. You are my "random act of genealogy kindness for this
week." Send me what you know about the dates and places in Boone County
(townships/Cemeteries). I will be going to the Sullivan Museum next week
and will see what they have. Do you think they lived near the
Hamilton/Boone County Line. I live about 2 miles from that line. Also let
me know what sources you have looked at so I don't spend time duplicating
your effort. Have you checked census records to see when he may have died?
Thanks thanks, thanks.... but I have been to the Sullivan Museum and I think
I have all that they have......fact is I think someone has contributed info
that came from me in the first place. but, I have not been there for about 6
years....
Woodford was b. 14 Dec. 1833, probably in Ky...... he was murdered in Boone
Co., Oct. 5, 1866
1850 census, Woodford lived in home of Jane Duzan, age 72, b. Va, her son
William N., age 43, was a physician, b. Tennessee, George W., age 36, was a
physician, Woodford was a laborer and had attended school within the year. Was
he just working and living there or was he somehow related? George Duzan was
a witness to the murder trial of Prichard.
I believe Prichard was the murderer.....
Lebanon Weekly - Aug. 9, 1866 - "MAN STABBED - A plasterer named Miller
was stabbed last Saturday at Zionsville by Woodford Cully. The wound inflicted
was in the upper part of the abdomen and reaching to the depth of the length
of the blade of the knife, some four or five inches. The wound was attended
to by Dr. Rocman and the man now is getting along finely. The cause of the
difficulty is unknown, more than they were both under the influence of the
demon, whisky."
so, maybe the murder was a result of both of them being under the
influence...
but, one of the family traditions is that it was the result of an election
day quarrel - There was an election Oct. 9th, 1866 - 5th was a Friday.
"Election time became a gala time that no man wanted to miss. In times of great
political feeling as during the Civil War and the years following, heated
arguments were many, often proceeding from words to blows." (from a Boone Co.,
newspaper)
an uncle who liked to joke said he stole a horse.. another said he was out
with someone else's wife... so I say he stole a horse, picked up someone's
wife, and stopped off to vote...
Woodford is buried in Little Creek Cemetery, Hamilton Co.... His wife, Mary
Lucretia Vance, daughter of Samuel Vance and Sarah Voss, remarried to M.
Jefferson Thomas Voss and moved to Howard County, Indiana.....
I have info on Mary Vance and her ancestors and descendants....
Robert T. Culley was born Aug. 30, 1837 in Brown Co., Indiana and d. Sept.
9, 1918 in Boone Co. ...... He is listed as living with Woodford and wife on
the 1860 census...
His obit:
Obit: Robert T. Culley, son of Henry & Rebecca Culley was born in Brown Co.,
Aug. 30, 1837, later coming with his parents to Boone Co., where he grew to
manhood and died Sept. 9 at age of 81. He married Mariah Saunders Sept 17,
1863. He had 12 children, 8 sons & 4 daughters. He left a widow, 6 sons & l
daughter, 20 grandchildren & 1 gr-grandchild. He was a member of the Odd
Fellows for 37 years. Ed Culley of New Albany, a son. Mrs. Mariah Saunders has
moved in with her daughter, Roseall Deeke and family. Zionsville Times, Sept. 12
& 19, 1918, Zionsville Museum
R. F. Culley was a witness at one of the times the murder trial was
postponed, as he was paid for his time... This could well be R. T.???
James Alexander Culley was b. 20 May 1831, and another researcher said he
was either born in TN or Boone Co., Indiana
He died March 8 1960 at Whitestown, Boone Co., IN..... I do not have a
burial place for him..
James Alexander Culley named one of his children Woodford.... he is listed
on the IN mortality list....
Now for other information... there was a James Culley b. abt. 1756 in
VA..... he died 1839/1840 in Brown Co., Indiana.....
Estate settlement: bills were paid for "to boarding of infant ---- under 6 ?
years-------for Woodford P. Cully $26.00.
Cap for Woodford Cully, 87 cents.
Also mentioned in the paid bills is a Margaret Davenport whose son was
living with Woodford P. Culley in the 1860 census of Boone Co., Indiana.
Now for sources that I have searched... I have been to the Boone Co.
Courthouse - was looking for info on the murder of Woodford..... a very kind lady
went up into the attic? storeroom and searched for me, also, but nothing... but
then out of the blue someone sent me info that it had been venued to
Hamilton Co.,,,,,, so I spent time over there looking..... there was info about
Willliam Prichard who evidently was the murderer..... the case was continued,
again and again and finally no more info.....
James Alexander Culley was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in
Whitestown.... I have not checked to see if they have any records...
I have not checked Boone Co. for info on Henry and Rebecca Culley, the
parents of Robert T. That certainly is an oversight....
1860 census Woodford was a farmer in Eagle Twp. Boone Co. & living with him
were James Davenport and Eliza Davenport, children of Margaret Culley &
Edward Davenport, married 10 March 1840 in Brown County.
Gee, I don't want to overload you, but want you to have what might give you
some leads.... and maybe the Sullivan Museum has received more info since I
have been there... isn't that a great place? and they were always so kind
and helpful..... but I now live in Tennessee .
My husband said that when he was little, he is sure someone had a copy of
the newspaper article about the murder, but I could find no newspapers for that
time...... I went to State Library and read some, but that was several
years ago and I don't remember what they had.. but I found nothing.
Thanks for any help you can give, and I appreciate your help, but would not
impose on you to spend much time researching..

Okay, so we know he was alive in 1915 but the death date could be anytime
after that, correct?
I'll grab the cemetery books for both Union and Eagle and see if I can find
him when I am in there. There may be some new listings. I'm not sure how
they have the deaths recorded at the courthouse -- I have never looked one
up in Indiana. I am a transplant here. Perhaps if they have an index I can
look at it when I am in Lebanon and see if I can find him. I thought I
would also look at the newspaper files to see if any of these folks left
obituaries that might explain the relationship.
I'm not sure just when I will get to this so be patient.

Let me see if I understand this correctly? You are looking for Jessie's
burial place, right? Do you know when and where they were divorced? What
exactly do you mean by w/o Jessis(Salem Cemetery 24 August 1929) 8 March
1915? What are these dates. Have you located them in any of the census
records? There are several small cemeteries in Eagle and Union townships
(one just across a corn/bean field from my house.

Did someone from the Sullivan Museum search their records? They have quite
a few cemetery books.

Well, I know by the INBOONE digest numbers that I missed a number of them,
and I had posted about this before. Glad INBOONE-L is getting through!
There is a rootsweb archived thread I started about my brickwall, Jessie
Sheets, and a couple of posters suggested help, but I have been unable to
contact them.
So here goes again:
Jessie was b. 5 Apr 1876 in Zionsville;
m. 1 Leona LAYTON (b. Jul 1883 in Indiana) abt 1899 in Boone Co.
m. 2 Carrie SHAW (b. 19 Dec 1877 in Zionsville; d. 22 Aug 1929 at Methodist
Hospital, Indianapolis, Marion County; bur. w/o Jessie Salem Cemetery 24 Aug
1929) 8 Mar 1915 in Eagle Township.
Jessie divorced both Leona and Carrie (or maybe THEY divorced him...)
I had contacted the Sullivan Library about Jessie's death and burial dates
and places but they weren't able to help. I have a listing of those buried
at SHEETS cemetery but his name isn't there.
Can't get his death certificate without knowing where and when he died, and
I am unable to get his birth certificate (probably none was filed). For all
I know, He may have moved out of Boone County before after he and Carrie
split up.
I have a small picture of Jessie as well.

Marjorie,
I am interested in the descendants of George N. Culley who married Ida
Jones in Boone County in 1888. George was one of Robert Culley's sons.
It has been a while since I worked over the census for Boone County, but
I came to the same conclusion that Woodford Culley was probaby a sibling
to Robert. I have the names of George's children, but I am trying bring
the line forward.

Hello all:
Earlier this week I unsubscribed from digest mode because I've only gotten a
few digests in the last several months. I then subscribed to INBOONE-L,
hoping I'd start receiving messages. No such luck.
Maybe my ISP is filtering it as spam. But I have no problems receiving other
rootsweb.com digests, such as INPUTNAM-D.
I really want messages from the Boone County list, as hundreds of my
ancestors hailed from there.
Any thoughts?
Michael
