Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Here's another source of information about burial dates. Burial permits
have been written for people being buried in Indiana cemeteries for many
years, probably back into the 1910's. I found that out from looking at one
cemetery's records. Here's the problem, though. The funeral home director
has to hand these off to some one at the cemetery. In one instance, he had
been giving them to the grave digger. Who knows what that person did with
them? If the cemetery has a caretaker on duty, I imagine the problem is
less frequent.
But if the cemetery has its records, ask for this document. I have found
some of them, but not all of them, have been kept as part of one cemetery's
documents.
Otherwise, after 1882, look for death records if the county of death is known.

Donnagene and Kim,
Thanks for mentioning all this. I hope I will NOT find my family's obits
to say they were buried there, but if I do, I will at least know I won't
need to look for stones. I feel for those like Rhonda who are forced to
deal with the results of a community's disregard for some of its veterans,
pioneers, and their descendants.

I've been following the cemetary discussion with interest (while
procrastinating on other projects). When I was in elementary school, I
walked through Cedar Hill cemetary to get to school at Central. I always
knew it had been a cemetary. Right by the alley, where it comes out on Park
Street, there were two or three headstones, they were flat in the ground.
Regarding another cemetary, outside Lebanon on State Rd. 39, Bethel
Cemetary...my great grandfather, Ivan Cohee, used to be caretaker there. My
dad and uncle remember helping him dig graves in the late forties, early
fifties. Ivan's parents and grandparents are buried there. My dad said that
Ivan's parents used to be close to the highway and that Ivan moved them.
They now lie near the back of the cemetary. I wonder if my great
grandfather was anticipating progress. That cemetary is in pretty good
shape still.
I always try to visit at least one cemetary every time I am in Lebanon.
It's good to see whether the old ones are still in use and to be on the
lookout for development of the town that might have a negative impact on
our cemetaries.

You would have to find enough people and then do they still live in Lebanon
and vote. I for one do not have any direct ancestors buried there, just an
aunt, but I am still apauled at the fact that they did that. Park my big
toe, it seems to just be a piece of land that is mowed and used for parking
of cars for the July 4th parade, after I found out about it, I thought about
printing flyers and put them on all the cars that were parked there?? Be
kind of neat if a bunch of peope would make a float of a cemetery with a
large tombstone saying Cedar Hill on it. Not to be morbid, but with a theme
to honor the dead soldiers that were buried there.

Hi Again Kim,
One of the Ladies working in the office at Oak Hill is a cousin of mine. I
found this out after I went there to get a copy of the Byroad's and Purdue's
burried there. I mentioned that Most of My Byroad ancestors were burried in
there and she said that Hers were too. She told me that
she is Cynthia Byroad's Granddaughter and I told her that I am Pansy Byroad
Purdue's Granddaughter. Cynthia and My Grandmother I believe were cousins.
My Grandmother's parents were Thomas Neal and Susan Ullery Byroad. GGrandpa
and GGrandma Susan had 2 older children who both died at a young age, Grace
dying at age 3 years and Edward who died before he was a year old, both
dying the same year. I have yet to find out where and when they were
burried. Is there any way of finding this out? They were the oldest
children then Alonzo, Adeline(Addy) and then My Grandmother was the
youngest. Grandma and Uncle Alonzo and His wife are burried in Oak Hill, I
wonder if Grace and Edward were too even though they are not listed in the
paper I have of the ancestors who are burried there, or if they could have
been some that were burried in Cedar Hill. I would really like to find out
for sure.
Always
Mary Anne Cook

Mary Ann, was the Thomas Neal a relative of Stephen Neal?
I looked in the cemetery record books that I have and do not see Grace and
Edward listed. There is a Grace Neal but she is not the same one. I remember
her.
Donnagene
If I remember right, at the time no one or group was caring for the cemetery
and it was overgrown and a mess. So the city took it over. Most of the
stones could not be read as they were of the material that was crumbling
etc. Today I don't think this would happen. Most places have a cemetery
association that cares or sees that the ground is cared for.
Who looks after Brown's Wonder cemetery since the church is gone?

I haven't lived in Lebanon for many years. Everyone knew that that was a
cemetery at the time it was cleared. I was too young at the time to really
care. My husband and I both have ancestors buried there. And yes, when we
were in Junior High our Gym class went there too.
Ok, you metioned old 52. What I think of as the city dump was at the end of
South Meridian St. That was what I pictured in my mind and I couldn't
remember a golf course being built there.
Now I am following you.
I think when the article was in the paper in the 50's it told of the
soldiers buried there and some of the people.

this is: some of the bodies were removed and some I know are in Oak Hill,
this I know from talking to the lady in the office at Oak Hill in Lebanon.
This would have been I would guess when they removed the stones. As I think
it would be impossible to "dig up" the right one and remove them. If you
have never seem it, it is a pretty large area, maybe at least 2 acres. I do
wonder though, the stones were supposedly removed in the 50's yet how many
relatives were in fact still around to have their loved ones moved. I would
say not many were removed. The marker reads "Abononed 1872" yet I found
several stones listed that were after that period. Yet still even after
that there are some cemeteries that keep terrible records. I just last week
called the caretaker of one, only thing on the stones were years listed
(1896-1965) there were no records of the month or day he was buried, so that
left a whole year to search for the obituary. Funeral homes and cemeteries
must be made to keep better records, not all of them do keep such terrible
records, but for those that do, something must be done.

Folks, this activity is at the heart of the present PETITION to save burial
grounds. The PETITION can be found on the Internet, its URL I do not have to
reproduce for you, due to my recent computer hard drive crash. We have been
asking people top support FEDERAL Legislation that would protect ALL burial
grounds in America from such destruction as CEDAR HILL Cemetery
Maybe someone can repost that URL for new listers and all will join in such a
PETITION. I supported that PETITION back in 1998. Some States now have
pending legislation to improve their laws.

The stones were stored for a period of time and then removed to the city
dump. Which is now a golf course. It has been said that people that live
there where the dump was, and near the golf course have found parts of the
tombstones buried in their yards.

he remarried 1883 {Mary died 1889, so they must have divorced}

Alice Louisa McCLAIN married 3Jan 1880 to William C. PERKINS in Boone Co.IN.
, she later married the above James W. BALDWIN 1883.......did they divorce or
did Wm.C. Perkins die in Boone Co.IN??

Thank you all so much for your responses. I have been chasing Sarah
Dillinger Paddock for ages. 2 of my great great grandmothers have been like
this - so close and yet so far! You know they are there, but you can't
prove it!
Most of all - thank you to Donna Gene who handed me Sarah on a platter this
morning - HAMILTON County, Washington Twp, page 261!!!!
PS - Rachel Newcomer was living next door!
Thanks again
Pam Arnold
