I am searching for some possible leads to generations prior to Cornelius Voth (1810
Karolswalde Volhynia- 1864 Karolswalde) and Helena Jantz-Unruh (1810 Karolswalde- 1864
Karolswalde) as well as Peter Heinreich Jantz (1810 Antonofka, Volhynia- 1895 Glossel,
Kansas) and Katharina Unruh (1817 Antonofka- 1905 Durham Park, Kansas). I am the fourth
great grandson of Cornelius Voth and Helena Jantz-Unruh. I am trying to answer the
years-old question, where they originally come from? I know my family in the 1800's,
especially those that immigrated to the United States, spoke Mennonite Low German, a
dialect of Low German originally spoken in East Prussia. So, it's safe to assume they
were in East Prussia before going to Volhynia, Ukraine at the time was falling in the
hands of the Russian Empire.
My lineage, if in question, is simply this:
My grandfather Martin Voth is the son of Peter Voth, who is the son of Tobias Voth, who is
the son of David Voth, and finally, the son of Cornelius Voth.
By the way, it's V-O-T-H. No F. Does not rhyme with goth. It's a variant of the
word voot, a low german word for foot. Suggesting our family originated near the mountains
in Central Germany, not because we had weird feet. I speculate we originated to the North
of those mountains in the low plains.
