On
Ancestry.com I have found several online trees which make SELAH ELLIS the father of
JOHN HALE who died in Blackford County about 1862. I would like to know if I am wrong in
doubting that Selah is John's father. Can anyone who knows Blackford County help?
We know John Hale who was born in New York in 1811 and became the second husband of Mercy
Wetherby in 1836 in Seneca County, New York. We have the names of John and Mercy's
many children. We know that John Hale appears in the 1850 St Joseph County Federal census
in the town of Mendon and in the 1860 Cass County, Michigan census - he had many children,
often with unusual names, and we know that all or some of these children appear on the
several online family trees show John Hale as the son of Selah Ellis.
It seems much more likely that this John Hale was in fact the son of a man named who was
also named Hale. There are many likely candidates in Seneca County, New York. Consider the
following: 1) Caleb Hale is shown as head of household in Senaca County the 1820 census
and Susan Hale is head of household in 1830. 2) Susan Hale, who died in 1855, wife of
Caleb Hale, is buried in Flowerfield Baptist Cemetery, St Joseph County, and short
distance from where John Hale was living in 1850. 3) Susan and Caleb Hale are the parents
of several well documented St. Joseph County Residents including David S. Hale, Caroline
Hale [Worthington], Hezekiah Hale who died in 1844 (whose daughter was raised by
Caroline)and perhaps Henry Hale who's name is listed next to John Hale in the 1850
Census. 5) We can document several land transactions between David S. Hale and John Hale.
Can anyone show me any evidence, other than online trees, which demonstrates that John
Hale was the son of Selah Ellis?
