OLDEST RESIDENT IS DEAD
Mrs. John Owens died at the home of her son, A.M. Owens on east Grant street yesterday
morning at 8:00. Her death was from natural dauses arising from old age.
Mrs. Owens was born in North Carolina in 1804 and was 97 years, 5 months, and 11 days
old at the time of her death. She was the oldest daughter of Spencer and Elizabeth Elliott
and an only sister survives her of the Elliott family. As Miss Elliott, she was first
married to John Owwens in Carolina in 1828 and after the birth of their son, A,M., the
Owens family moved to IN and located in Wayne county near Richmond.
Later they settled on a farm near Williamsburg, in the same county where three
daughters were born - Martha Jane, Elizabeth, and Melvina, all of whom died while still
children.
A sister, Mary Wadman, living at Russiaville and A.M. Owens of this city are the only
family relations that survive, but 4 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchilren and 12
great-great grandchildren are still living and the deceased was very proud of the
different generations. They have a picture in the Owens family which was taken of the
oldest members of five generations and it is probably the only picture of the kind in the
state.
Mrs. Owens was conscious of her failing conditions and awaited the approaching end with
calm resignation, the only sad feature to her being that she was unable to see and speak a
last word to her son's wife who is at present bedfast with pneumonia.
The funeral will be held at the house tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock.
