a german drowned at hartlepool.
an inquest was held on monday, before mr settle, at the town hall, hartlepool, on the body
of a german, who was found on the rocks near the lighthouse. from the evidence adduced it
appears that the deceased was lying on the rocks having apparently been washed up by the
tide. there were no marks of violence on him but what seemed post-mortem ones. a
pocket-book and a number of papers were found on upon him. the papers consisted of an
american naturalisation document of one matthias roll, aged 33; also a discharge from the
federal army 3 years servitude. as the deceased corresponds with the age set forth on the
document, and the appearance being favourable to the deceased being a german, the jury
returned a verdict to the following effect:- "that we are of the opinion that
deceased is matthias roll, who was found drowned, but whether he came to his death
accidently or otherwise, there is no evidence to show".
