Hello, I searched Matilda out in the 1860,70,80,90, and 1900 census
It looks to me that she left Abraham and went to live with her brother John. In 1870. She
couldn't remember her age! I will go look again.
In 1860 She is living in Jackson, Blackford Indiana, age 25, living with Abner Hurbough
51, Walberry Hurbough 15 m, Stausberry, 13 m, Virginia 11, Asbury 9,m America 6 f. Looking
at the orginal record Abner could be Abrm She said she was born in Ohio, the first two
children in Ohio and the next 3 in Indiana. She must have liked berries.
In 1870, Abram Herbaugh is living in Rochester Folton Indiana says he is 57 from VA
Virgina 20, Ahsbury 18, and American 16 are with him.
In 1870 John Dierduff 57 VA,lives in Washington Twns Blackford Indiana with his sister
Tilda 27 Oh and her son Samuel Hautboy age 6 Ind. (should be 35)
In 1880, John Dearduff 72, is disabled with ulcer on his leg, (which means venous stasis),
Matilda Herbaugh 52,, Samuel Harbaugh (19)(I think the parenthesis meant they didn't
know for sure his age.) (Should be 45)
IN 1890
Matilda Herbaugh 50 living with John Dearduff,72 her brother along wtih her son Samuel
Herbaugh 19 in Washington, Blackford Indiana in 1880. Said her parents were both born in
VA, said she was married and keeping house. Said she was born in Va. That makes her birth
year about 1830. (She should be 55)
She is in the 1900 census with Samuel Herbaugh son age 39,wife Alice Herbaugh 34, Carl
Herbaugh 14, Dellia Herbaugh 12, Lena Herbaugh 8.12 and Matida Herbaugh no age
Washington, Blackford Indiania. States she was the mother no age, unknown birthplace
I don't know why she gives her age so young in 1870 but gives it correctly in 1890. In
1880 she states her age as too old.
I have a sneaking suspicion that Matilda isn't well. And as the years go by she loses
her memory. Unless John is answering the door for the census taker and he doesn't know
much. He remains single as far as I can tell, since he was single in 1860 in Washington
Township, Blackford Indiana.
Genealogy is sure interesting!
LeAnne
So I am going to go with the 1850 census date for her birth.
