LOVE TRUST ENDS IN DEATH
HARTFORD CITY, Ind., Jan 28 – Miss Francis Leffler, the 16 year old daughter of George
Leffler, one of the best known farmers in Washington Township, was practically cremated
before the eyes of her lover, Charles Banter, yesterday morning. Banter accompanied her
to a revival meeting and both returned to her home tired and sleepy. They sat before an
open fire and both fell asleep.
The occupants of the house were shortly awakened by screams. The youthful lover awoke
just in time to see the girl dashing out the door with her clothing in flames.
The wind added strength to the blaze , but the girl ran until she sank from exhaustion.
Her clothes were entirely burned from her body and she died from her injuries. Before she
died she told the attending physician that the wind had blown down the chimney with such
force as to send a blaze against her dress, igniting it, and that her lover was in no way
responsible fore the accident. Banter is distracted with grief.
