I was just doing some research to determine if any of my ancestors took
part in any major battles during the Civil War. I thought that if anybody
else had ancestors in this company that may be interesting to know. I know
that the 84th Indiana Infantry, which had at least one company from
Blackford Co. (Company D), took part in the battle of Chickamauga in Georgia
(haven't found any others yet).
My great great grandfather John J. Hays, his brother William Hays and
brother-in-law Nathan Ward were all in this company, but none of the three
took part in the battle. The battle took place on September 18 and 19,
1863, just south of Chatanooga, TN. William Hays had died of Typhoid Fever
on March 15, 1863 in the hospital at Nashville, TN. John Hays was admitted
to the hospital at Nashville, TN on March 7, 1863 and bounced around from
hospital to hospital until he was discharged in December 1863. Nathan Ward
managed to avoid getting sick until about September 1, 1863, when he was
sent to the hospital at Nadhville and he died at the hospital in Stephenson,
AL Feb 8, 1864.
