Hello - I am Susan Neff, Historian for the Dr. James Ford Historic Home in Wabash, Indiana
(please visit our web site listed below). I am in search of any information about the
family of one of the Ford granddaughters who lived in Licking Township, Blackford County
1885 to 1902. The purpose of this request is for exhibit in our house museum and credit
to contributor(s) will be given.
America Holton Thompson (b. Jan 31 1863 in our museum house) is a daughter of Mary
Elizabeth Ford (Mrs. Capt. Joseph Moran) Thompson. America was a niece of William Jesse
Ford (a mail carrier) and Edwin Holton Ford (HC water superintendent and founder of Ford
Meter Box Co.), both of Hartford City.
She married Daniel Ayres Baker (b. Feb 1863 in Wabash County) on Aug 27 1883 in
Platteville, Weld Co., Colorado. Here they had two children: Hazel Baker [m. Charles
Boyd] b. Dec 13 1884, and Homer Vern Baker [m. Maud Babcock] b. Jul 1 1886.
America received 40 acres of land in Blackford County from her grandfather, Dr. James
Ford, in 1885 as a distributive share of her mother's estate (land situated in Section
28, Township 24 North, Range 11 East). America and Daniel moved onto this land in 1886.
Here they had 7 more children:
Rhea Baker [m. Nestor LeCerte] b. Dec 1 1887
Joseph Thompson Baker [m. Nellie Middaugh] b. Dec 1889
Carl Holton Baker [m. Ruth Carroll] b. Aug 1891
Allena Baker [m. Earl Earnest] b. Aug 24 1893
Frank H. Baker [m. Bertha ??] b. Jul 1896 or 1897
Fred Stone Baker [m. Loretta Richardson] b. Jan 1899
Harry Stamps Baker [m. Florence Fite] b. Jun 21 1901
THE ABOVE IS CONFIRMED IN THE 1900 BLACKFORD COUNTY CENSUS. FYI--NONE OF THE ABOVE
MARRIAGES OCCURRED IN BLACKFORD COUNTY because in mid-1902, Daniel and America Baker
boarded a train with their 9 children and moved permanently to Colfax, Washington. Here
they had two more children: America Jr. b. Oct 1903 and Edna b. 1905.
We are seeking any information, public records, photos, hospital records, school records,
newspaper articles, wedding announcements, etc. about the Baker family in the period 1885
to 1902. Also, are there any "out of area" newspaper obits for any of the
family listed above (death dates will gladly be furnished upon request).
We are most appreciative for your kind assistance. Thank you in advance.
