COUPLE IS ASPHYXIATED
Grant County Farmer and Wife Die From Coal Fumes
Marion, Ind., Oct 30 - Michael Futrell, 59 years old, a wealthy farmer, and his wife,
Martha Futrell 57, were asphyxiated Wednesday night by coal gas while they slept at their
home. When neighbors opened the house yesterday they found them dead in bed, and their
granddaughter, Glenn Ryan, 13, was barely alive. The girl was carried into the open air
and after hard work by physicians she was restored to consciousness and it is believed she
will survive.
Coroner Harrison found that gas fumes arising from coal in a base-burner filled the rooms
of the house. The pipe leading from the base-burner was found to be filled with ashes,
thus forcing the gas fumes into the room instead of permitting them to pass up the
chimney.
Mr. Futrell was the owner of 240 acres of land, unusually productive of gas and oil, when
wells were drilled in this county a few years ago. His royalty from crude oil at one time
amounted to more than $2,000 a month.
