RETURNED DEAD SOLDIER TO BLACKFORD COUNTY
Services Sunday for Hartford City’s First Victim in Great War
Hartford City, Ind. Aug 21 – The funeral of Paul O. E. Meyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H.
Meyer, of this city whose body arrived here tonight, will be held next Sunday afternoon at
2 o’clock from Grace M. E. church, in charge of the American Legion and Service Star
Legion.
The young man died on a transport enroute to Liverpool in January 1918, and was the first
from this county to give his life in the world war. The Legion post here is named in his
honor.
Full military honors will be given him. An armed guard met the body at the station and
accompanied it to the second floor of the Blackford county courthouse, where it will be in
state until Friday afternoon. It will then be taken to the home and remain there until
time for the funeral.
