William L. Gillispie (Gillespie?), of this city, also received a distinguished service
cross for bravery in service. Other Hoosiers of this locality named, are George J.
Overmeyer, Hartford City; Monroe Elliot, Huntington; and Newton Rex, Decatur.
The historical commission had previously announced that the eight allied nations had given
decorations to 264 Indiana men. The total of Hoosiers who received official decorations
for service in the world war was 391. This record is believed to be one of the best of
any state in the Union.
