Dear Adam and Everybody,
We very much appreciate the value of the material that we find and place on
our site. And we're happy to credit those who originally placed the
material on the web. We do so with much of it.
We hope that those who visit our site find added value in the way we handle
the material. We do put quite a bit of effort into it and there are some
features that we provide that are not found anywhere else on the Internet
that we have seen.
If you represent the Allen County Library or any other, we are happy to
discuss with you how you would like credits to your library to appear. We
have had a link on our site to the Allen County Library for quite some time.
It's an excellent resource, as is the University of Michigan Library, the
Newberry Library of Chicago, and many others.
Material which appears on the Internet Archive is problematic to credit
because there are always at least two layers of work, that of the Archive,
and that of those who own the original book and scanned it. Our guiding
principle has been that the material was placed online on the Archive and in
the other digital libraries to make it accessible. We are doing our best to
promote that purpose by selecting books with lots of names and adding value
by putting them in a uniform format which is easily handled on a slow
connection and/or slow computer.
We began with our personal directories and books from the Pittsburgh area,
where we live. We have discussed the issues you raise at length with people
from the University of Pittsburgh Digital Research Library and have been
guided by those discussions.
We're careful and we certainly don't intend to fool anyone or rip anyone
off. We hope that you continue to come to our site and find good things
there. Please post back via the list or directly if you like.

Subject: [INALLEN] A word of caution about
evendon.com
Before donating money for Kriegers' site, one should be aware that
many of the directories posted there were not scanned by them at
all. They are merely copied from the sites that actually did the
scanning work at a significant expense.
Many of the directories posted on
evendon.com were scanned by the
Internet Archive in cooperation with the Allen County Public
Library. The directories and many other books are available free at
http://www.archive.org/details/texts.
If you would like to read about the people who put forth the effort
to make these books available online, visit:

60323
Other directories on
evendon.com were scanned by Google in their
partnerships with other repositories. You can search and view their
books at
http://books.google.com.
I recommend that the Kriegers alter their site and their
communications to acknowledge the efforts of the organizations that
worked to scan the materials and the repositories that have
graciously allowed their collections to be scanned.
It is not fair practice to copy the work of others and solicit
donations for it.

Hi!
I just love your website! And I hope at some point to be able to
donate money for it.
I didn't know if you knew that when you view a directory, at least
the Indianapolis ones, that only half of each page is view and
there's no way to scroll the rest of the way down the page. I just
looked again at the site and your Directories page is the same way.
I hope this helpful.
Keep up the great work!
Thanks,
