Some early Fort Wayne newspapers go back to the 1850s, possibly 1840s', but
are incomplete in the early years. Most of the 5 or 6 daily/weekly
newspapers pre-1920 are fully searchable available online through the
Ancestry.com subscription service available at the Allen County Public
Library and many libraries across the country with
Ancestry.com
subscriptions. There are some old newspapers on microfilm in the ACPL that
are not online. I was told very few to none of the microfilmed newspapers
still exist at the library.
A lot of old newspapers are available on microfilm from the Indiana state
library since they were usually the facility that copied the newspaper to
microfilm so kept a copy for themselves. You can get inter-library loan in
Indiana, I don't know about out of state. It is possible they have the
original newspapers since the libraries for lack of space would only want
the microfilm copies. Some of the microfilm at ACPL was "cleaned and
restored" up to around the 1950's, so some of the old newspapers are more
legible than the "newer" newspapers because of scratches on the microfilm.
The online images have been cleaned up, but sometimes the word quality has
declined as a result.

Hi Jane!
From what I've seen at the Ft. Wayne library is the microfilmed
copies go
back to March of 1889. I'm working on transcribing items from those
papers,
which I need to get back to. :-)
Someone else from this list told me the earlier newspapers were destroyed in
a fire. Don't quote me on that for I'm not sure. Maybe someone else on the
list can chime in on that point.
Also, I'm not sure if Indiana does this or not, but the State Library in
Indianapolis loan out their microfilmed copies of newspapers.
Hope this helps somewhat. :-)

Richard,
Do you know when the Allen Co newspapers began publishing and if any of
the earliest ones have been microfilmed? If so, do you know if they are
available for interlibrary loan from any source?
My great grandfather, Alonzo Colburn stated that he was born in Ft.Wayne,
Allen Co., Indiana and we think it was sometime between 16 Aug 1850-1854.
His father, Joel Colburn who came over from Ireland in the late 1840's, we
think, and his mother died when he was young and the kids (Alonzo, Emmaline
& Sarah, that we know of) were sent to various homes to live. The family was
Catholic. He did not like his situation and left when he was about 12 yrs.
old and headed up towards Manitowoc, WI and then on up to Menominee,
Michigan where he became a farmer. He lived with my grandparents late in
his life and died at their home. My mother remembered both him and his wife
(my great grandmother) well as she was the one who found him dead in his
bedroom at their home when she was a young girl.
We can find no information on Alonzo before he settled in Menominee,
Michigan and are trying to research in any direction we can think of to find
out more about his live before that.
Thank you for any help or suggestions.
Sincerely,
Jane Monroe
