Hi Steven,
Do you know the county where he might have died? Birth and death records in
Indiana recorded from about 1882 to 1900 would be found at the county
health department office which is typically located in the town which is the
county seat. Depending upon the county, the records may be well indexed,
and therefore, more easily retrieved. If available, the charge for the
record may vary by location, but is minimal in Indiana - from about $1 a
copy fee to about $7 for a certified copy.
If your ancestor actually died prior to the year the county recorded deaths,
you may be able to obtain evidence and information from other sources, such
as funeral home records, gravestones, obituaries, etc. Availability of
these, and other sources, will vary by location. Some secondary resources
are indexed - others are not, so the ease with which a record may be found
in these will vary as well.
If you know the county, I will be happy to point you in the right direction
to request the death record. You may find some help with my Indiana Local
History page below my signature.
I would also be happy to help in a professional researcher capacity, should
you need further assistance.
Respectfully,

Hi--
Will IN's State Dept. of Health search for a death certificate/record
within a 20-year time span, and if so, do one of you out there know how
much it will cost me for the search? If they won't do such a search,
will they let someone come in and look for the information? And might
there be someone reading this who'd be willing to do this, gratis or for
a fee? Thank you for any useful help!
