Hi Cris,
The State Hospital in Fort Wayne, IN is an institution for the care of the
mentally retarded. In the "old" days it was a home to many people who today
would not be institutionalized such as borderline mentally retarded & learning
disabled. They farmed land to grow food, & even had a cemetery of their own
which, I have been told, was located on the land that is presently on the
grounds of Indiana University-Purdue University of Fort Wayne. Today the
greater percentage of the population is profoundly mentally retarded who are
not able to live in a group home setting.
