Hi Cris,
The State Hospital in Fort Wayne, IN is an institution for the care of the
mentally retarded. It was located on State Street in the north part of Fort
Wayne. In the "old" days it was a home to many people who today would not be
institutionalized such as borderline mentally retarded & learning disabled.
They farmed land to grow their own food, The farm of old at 4900 St. Joe Rd. is
today the site of the institution - now it is called Fort Wayne State
Developmental Center. I have been told, the old cemetery for the State
hospital, is across the street from its present location on the land that is
presently on the grounds of Indiana University-Purdue University of Fort Wayne.
Today the
greater percentage of the population is profoundly mentally retarded who are
not able to live in a group home setting.
