Gentlemen,
My grandmother was also placed in the Allen County Orphans Home. I have
done a little research. It was on the Lower Huntington Road just a few
miles from town (I don't know if they calculated from the center or the
outer edge). It no longer exists. I asked at the Allen County Library and
at the Allen County Historical Society and neither of them knew the
location of the records. In fact, the ACHS told me specifically that they
had been destroyed. I, too, would like to inspect them.
I know that in the obituary of my grandmother's birth father, it stated
that the three younger children were being placed for adoption. I'd like
to know why they didn't stay together and how m she arrived at ACOH.
My grandmother was adopted by Louis Jacob Geiss and Mary Elizabeth Cordell
Brown Geiss. Family tradition has it that Louis was a trustee of the
institution.
But that is unverified.

I'd like to find any information about the Allen County Orphan's Home,
particularly if is still in existance. If not, where are the records? In
the 1910 census of Allen County, my grandfather HAROLD BOGGS was listed as
an "inmate", along with a couple other pages full of children. He was 12 at
the time. As near as I can figure, he would have been put nto the home
around 1903, and would have turned 18 and left in 1916. It appears that his
father, Virgil Eugene Boggs left his wife, Annie Burrell, and their 3
children. They had lived in neighboring Whitley County, in the town of
Churubusco for a while, and at some point had moved to Ft. Wayne before
leaving. I'd like to find the records to see actually who put him (and his
brother and sister) into the home, and exactly when it was done.
Thanks!
Jim Phelps

Jim,
I would like this information myself. My Grandmother at the age of 8 was
placed in the Orphanage there in Ft. Wayne. This was back around 1919. My
mother has a picture of her mother with a young girl that no one can
identify.
We believe that it may have been a friend of hers that was in the
Orphanage
with her.
