Hello!
I am reserching the following surnames in Ft. Wayne: SPENCE, RAYHOUSERS,
WRIGHT, COVINGTON, SEDGWICK AND BEAVER.
Jane (BODDY) SPENCE and her husband, John, emigrated from England about
1850. They were both born about 1800 in Yorkshire, England. I don't know if
they came directly to Ft. Wayne or lived elsewhere first. Jane had a
brother, Galen BODDY that lived in western New York and a sister, Eliza
(Boddy) MOORHOUSE that lived near Avilla, in Noble County, IN.
John Spence died before 1857. Jane then lived at 209 W. Jefferson in Ft.
Wayne. I wonder if this house is still standing? Jane died in 1878 and her
funeral was held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and she is
buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Avilla next to her sister, Eliza (Boddy)
MOORHOUSE.
Jane and John SPENCE had 5 children including two sons John (born 1825 in
Leeds, England) and Edward born in 1832. I do not know if they emigrated to
America with their parents or not???
There were also two daughters, both of whom lived in Ft. Wayne. Mary Jane
Spence married Rufus Rayhouser and they had five children: Charles
Washington, Franklin, Alfred, Addie who married Charles Wright (lived at 605
E. Creighton in 1915) and Annie who married Thomas COVINGTON, an
Episcopalian minister and they lived on Covington Rd. Would love to learn
more about these people and especially to hear from any of their
descendants. Another daughter, Caroline or Clara SPENCE married Augustus C.
Beaver and they had one child named Clara who married Frank Miller in 1887
and moved to Sacramento, Calif. according to the book, Valley of the Upper
Maumee. Caroline SPENCE BEAVER died in 1861. I do not know where she is
buried, possibly Lindenwood?
Although Jane SPENCE was Roman Catholic it appears that both of her
daughters were not. Her daughter, Mary Jane (Mrs. Rufus) RAYHOUSER died in
1915 and is buried at Lindenwood.
