There are two fascinating articles found in "Dawson's Ft. Wayne Weely
Times", 18 April 1860 and 25 April 1860. They are like a Then and Now. Then
being 1838 and Now 1860. The recollections are of the editor Mr. Dawson.
The first article describes his trip on horseback in the snow, March 1838,
from Dearborn County, IN, to Ft. Wayne, and his encounters, overnights, etc.
enroute are vividly described as are many of the villages he passes through.
The second article describes Ft. Wayne. Not ONLY the businesses found on
those early streets, but who owned them as well as where individuals lived
in 1838! He then compares all of this to the situation in 1860.
Many colorful stories are interspersed. Fascinating! I found these on
ancestry.com (paid sub.), but I'm certain they are available on microfilm at
the Allen County Public Library.
Really a must for anyone with early connections to Ft. Wayne.
Sincerely, Patricia Boddy Tharp
