Hello Larry and List!
I checked with a source from the Oregon Co. MO list, as they recently had a
discussion on this subject. I was sent the following info. Hope some of
this will help! Perhaps ACPL will have some of these sources.
Karl
I have found a jewel of a book at my library regarding the WWI info. It
is called, "THE GREAT WAR, A Guide to the Service Records of All the
Worlds Fighting Men and Volunteers" by Christina K. Schaefer, published
by the Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc.
I had seen some WWI books in my library and was asked to look up a
soldier for you. Another person stated that the records were burned and
could not be located. Both statements are true, sort of.
The WW I books I found, were on Gr. Brit. and France. I knew I had seen
books on WWI, unfortunately, none for U.S. As I stated before, my gen.
dept at my public library is quite extensive and huge. The U.S. Army
service records, according to the above book, burned from 1912-56 for
enlisted and from 1917-56 for officers. HOWEVER, the Selective Service
draft registration cards, 1917-18 (film 1522740 ff./M1509) are available
and for Arkansas are at the Arkansas History Commission, in Little Rock.
It is the draft cards that we use for research because of the burned
records. You can find the following there in Little Rock:
Selective Service registrations
WWI nurses from Arkansas
Discharge records
County discharge records on microfilm
It also stated that the draft Registration cards are also at the
National Archives at the East Point, GA facility. I looked and looked
for this address in the book, could not locate. I didn't know we had a
National Archives facility in GA!!
Again, according to this book, the storage of records have been divided
up by regions, For Arkansas (the Southwest Region), that means they are
at the Fort Worth, TX facility (on film) or some are at the state
archives, historical societies, and the state adjutant general or
Department of Veterans Affairs offices. For Missouri, (Central Plains
Region), they are in K.C., MO. The draft records 1917-1918 (film
1683089ff./m1509) are at the DAV in Jefferson City. You can find
Statements of Services and Bonus Application papers there in Jeff City.
