Thanks, Steve. I wish I had known that when I was there about a month ago.
We try to make it there 3 or 4 times a year. I really do love that
library!!

Subject: [INALLEN-L] Allen County vital records
Many people have expressed problems with our local vital record
office
here in Allen County. Here are a couple of suggestions to avoid dealing with
them.
1.) Most early vital records are available at the Allen County Public
Library on
microfilm and fiche. You can make a copy for 20 cents.
Deaths
City of Fort Wayne 1870-1932
County of Allen 1907-1930 (Pre-1907 lost)
Births
City of Fort Wayne 1882-1920
County of Allen 1907-1920 (Pre-1907 available soon?)
Delayed births
1942-1985
Marriages
1824-1951
Marriage Applications
1893-96, 1911-1919
2.) You can go to the basement of the County Courthouse and search the
marriage
indexes and marriage records free of charge.
Here are a couple of bits of information I have picked up after years of
dealing
with state and local health departments.
A.) Have you ever wanted to view the information on a record without
having to
purchase a certificate? Title 16, Article 37, Chapter 1, Section
10 of the Indiana Code says "the state registrar shall permit inspection of
the records"... if the person is qualified to receive a certificate.
B.) Title 16, Article 37, Chapter 1, Section 9 states If you need to
establish the
age of a student to obtain a work permit or to establish a
persons age in connection with a disability pension or death pension of a
person who is or has served the the armed forces "A charge may not be made
for furnishing a certificate of birth, death..."
The problem Brian Smead's cousin had, not being able to obtain pre-1907
county
(non-Fort Wayne) death records, is because the local registrar has
lost those records!
I hope this information is useful to somebody.
