Laura, I have also heard my gggrandfather was a boat builder and owned the boat
yard in Ind. where my ggaunt was born. I would love to know anything about the
boats and owners and if you know of John Bollinger or his son, George w.
Bollinger. One of them built the ship 'Ebersole" after a good friend and this
ship
is supposedly in a museum someplace in Indiana. I can't prove any of this but
would love to know where to look for this information. Regards, Phyllis H. Niles,
Chicago, IL.

Also, I am very interested in the history of the Wabash and Erie Canal. My
ancestor, Asa FAIRFIELD, built, or had built, the "Indiana," the first boat
that ran on the canal. He was the captain on that occasion (3 or 4 Jul
1835).
I would love to hear from anyone with mutual interests.
Thanks,

Terry Pepper has created a very nice Wabash-Erie Canal web site. I forwarded
your post to him. He has moved the site from its original location, and I'm
not sure of its current location. I hope he will send you the new URL.
I live on the West side of the Little Wabash River valley, on the hill above
the mile wide alluvial plain created by the melting ice after the last ice
age. The little Wabash River meanders down this plain from the summit at
Fort Wayne to west of Huntington, Indiana where it meets the Wabash River.
Fort Wayne is known as the "summit City" because it is located on an wide,
low end moraine forces all tributaries from the east and north to flow into
the Maumee River and all tributaries to the west and south west to flow into
the Wabash River system. During the large flood of 1982, the Maumee
tributaries actually overflowed into the Little Wabash (Junk Ditch) system in
the biggest flood in my memory. But that gives you an idea of how shallow
the end moraine is too - not much of a summit! :-)
The canal actually was built from near Toledo to Fort Wayne to Huntington and
ran along the Wabash River to Terre Haute, Indiana.
Have a great day! :-)
