Mimi, I went to the library today and discovered quit a bit about your
family.
I've made copies of everything and will send them to you if you'll send
me your address. I only ask for reimbursement of copies and postage.
1. In the 1870 Allen County, Indiana census, Mary Lilley age 40, is
listed as head of the household. Her children were Henry, age 16;
William age 15; Samuel, age 12; Clara, age 10; Harvey, age 7; Eddie age
3.
2. Next door to Mary is Samuel Lilley, age 70 born in NY, whom I later
discovered is her father-in-law.
3. I found the will of Samuel Lilley written 31 December 1869 and
Probate date 17 September 1870. It lists Mary Lillie widow of son
Samuel.
4. The obit index lists Samuel Lillie, Jr., near city who died at age 58
on 7 April 1869.
5. Also listed in this index is Samuel, age 71 who died 8 July 1870.
(This was Samuel Jr's father. It also says that Elizabeth Lillie wife of
Samuel, Sr. age about 50 died 3 September 1864.
6. I found the marriage of Samuel Lillie, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Gerard
on December 23, 1853. This would be Henry's parents and grand parents of
Lucy.
7. Both Samuel and Samuel, Jr. bought caskets from Pelitier Funeral Home
but I wasn't able to find where they are buried. That needs further
research.
8. I copied pages from the Index to Marriage Records 1824-1920. It has a
lot of Lillie names that you can figure out who they belong to later.
There is a Thomas H. Lillie who married Mary E. Bird on 13 November
1872. I would
bet that this is the Henry and Mary that I found in the 1880 census;
parents of Lucy.
9. I copied pages from the 1868-9 city directory. Samuel Lillie, Jr. is
listed as Manufacturer of Brick Machines and Samuel Lillie Sr is
manufacturer of drain tile.
10. In the 1870-71 city directory pages which I copied, Mary Lillie is
listed as toll-gate keeper. This evidently was along the Maumee Canal.
I think it's always fun to know what our ancestors did for a living. In
the 1870 census the elder Samuel's real estate is listed at being worth
$20,000. I figure that was a lot in those days.
The Will indexes have a lot of Lillie people listed. In the
Naturalization book there is a Lillie who came from Scotland, so I would
suspect that is where your line is from.
I hope I wrote this all out right for you and that you can understand
it. Are you just new doing genealogy? Thanks for the offer to me for
help in CA. My parents both died there and my son lives there, but I
don't have any ancestors besides my parents.

Oh thank you so much! Was Lucy born on the date that I gave for my great
gran? 9/28/73? Oh this is the first I have ever heard of her parents!
Thank you!
