Hello Elsie,
I was delighted to get your message - so quickly too!. Your's is my first
reply so far, but I think we may have a link with our LOPSHIREs.
Firstly, here is how I fit in:
My paternal grandmother, Ellen MOSS, had several siblings, three of whom
emigrated to the USA in the early 20th century, firstly to Ohio and then one
(Tom) moved to Gary, IN. Two of them (Tom and Annie) had families and I am
now in touch with their descendants in IN and OH through my family history
research. We've had two very enjoyable holidays catching up with them in the
USA since we first made contact about six years ago. The third sibling, Jack
MOSS married Blanche KNOWLTON and lived in Ohio. They remained childless, so
all the info I had on them was a few reminiscences from my American second
cousins who were old enough to remember them.
Then I started to investigate these families on the US censuses just
recently and I found that Blanche's parents were William KNOWLTON, a lumber
dealer (bn 1850/1 in Ohio) and Lucinda Ellen LOPSHIRE (bn 1856 in Indiana).
Lucinda's parents were William LOPSHIRE, a farmer born 1823/4 in Ohio and
Caroline RUCH, born 1820/3 in Alsace Lorraine, France (formerly in Germany).
This is where I got stuck. There is a lot of info on the Indiana LOPSHIREs
on the IGI (Family Search), but it is all submitted information and so I
can't be sure of its accuracy. It suggests that a William LOPSHIRE was born
on 5 Sept 1823 in Ohio, to George LOPSHIRE and Elisabeth, nee BENDER. There
were lots of other children mentioned, William being the oldest. The older
ones were born in Ohio and the younger ones in Indiana, after the family
moved to Allen County. George's birthplace is given variously as PA or
Germany (abt 1792/3). Elisabeth was born in PA 1799/1800.
The age of this William seems to fit mine, but as he had left home by the
time of the 1850 census, I cannot place him definitely with George and
Elisabeth. George appears on the 1840 census, but it only names the head of
household; other family members are only listed as numbers, by age.
George and Elisabeth had the following children (according to Family
Search), some of which are with them in 1850 and can therefore be confirmed
as definitely being related:
George, Mary, Catherine, Elizabeth, John, Henry*, Joseph, Filpena, David
*Henry appears to be yours. The info I have on him is that he was born
1839/40, IN (1850 census) and was a farmer (1870 census). I have his
marriage to Catherine FOGWELL on 6 Sept 1866 from Indiana Marriages on
Ancestry.com.
What I would really like to do is place William as a definite son of George
and Elisabeth, possibly from a will, memorial inscription or similar. I see
from the Allen County Genweb site that a George LOPSHIRE is among the first
settlers, so there must be some info held on him locally, perhaps in the
Allen County Library. Naturally, any other info on this family would also be
of interest to me. I think all the LOPSHIREs in Allen County are probably of
the same (German?) family. There appears to be a Lewis LOPSHIRE, age 29 in
1850, a wagon maker, who might be brother or cousin of George. I have
extracted several others from various censuses which I cannot so far
connect. There are so many Georges, Henrys, Lewises and Louis's, it gets
rather confusing.
Well, that's my side of things. If you would like a more detailed account of
my link to William and Caroline, I can easily run off a report from my
family history program. Do let me know.
Researching from London means I am restricted to the internet for my US
research, but I have access to Ancestry via the Society of Genealogists,
where I am a member and visit every Wednesday to volunteer. The rest I do at
home.
Where do you live? I'd be interested to hear more about you and your
LOPSHIRE link. Are you in Indiana? How much do you know about your SIMPSONs
in England? I'd be happy to help there if I can. It's a rather widespread
surname, but if you know where they lived in England and when they
emigrated, it might be possible to find out about them.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes,
Diana

Hello, I am on the Allen County website also. I have been for a few
years
however this is the first time I have found anyone looking for the same
thing I am. Anyway - WELCOME !!!
I am a descendant of the Hill family in Allen County, IN. Samuel Hill was
a
brother to my GR GR GR Grandmother Sarah Fogwell (Faulkwell) Hill.
Sarah
had a brother Samuel and he had a daughter Catherine who was married to a
Henry LOPSHIRE Sept 6, 1866. this Henry LOPSHIRE was a farmer, and seemed
to have been in Company C 142nd Regiment of the Indiana Infantry.
Possibly
in the Civil War. I have not investigated that. I will see what I
can
dig
up for you. Do you have any dates for yourWilliam and or George
Lopshire's?
I will loof forward to corresponding with you. I would also be interested
in knowing how to find out information on our Simpson family who
originated
in England. How neat.
Sincerely Elsie Simpson
