Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I would like to thank everyone who answered my question on SS in the military.
I received a lot of helpful tips and suggestions.
Thanks again!

Tina,
I assume you are trying to get information from some Government Agency
regarding your g-grandfather's military service and the Agency has requested
a Social Security # or a service # in order to conduct the search.
The Indiana State Archives in Indianapolis has some records of Indiana
citizens who served in WWI on microfilm. I recently looked at this
microfilm and the records I looked at had the service # included in the
information.
Best regards,
Scott Bosecker

Trina,
The Social Security Act was not passed until 1935. WWI of course was prior
to 1920.

Hello. Can someone tell me if a person entering into the military or being
drafted into a war had to have a Social Security number or get one if they
haven't already had one. My g-grandfather was in WWI and I can not find his
SS#. I'm sorry that this question is kind of off topic but this is the only
place where I thought I could get information.
Thanks,

Hello. Does anyone know where I can find a WWI mailing list?

I now have a date of death for Dr. Lydia Shapiro who was practicing at 1526
E. Wayne Street, Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1953.
So I have two needs.
1. Obituary look up, Date of Death: 04/04/71
2. Land records for her address. There is nothing left on this land
except stairs leading up to where it use to be. Would like to know
when she sold it and to who.
Any ideas or volunteers that could possibly help me out here?
TIA

Hi Cris- It's Leigh flplants(a)interpoint.net
- I wrote you before I am very interested in your situation. Here are some
ideas- but first- did you get my e-mail which told about the improbability
you had the right Lydia who died in California as that Lydia did not get a
Social Security number until 1954? If Lydia Shapiro died in Allen County, I
bet her property went to a charitable foundation.

The Allen County Library Periodicals Department for a small fee will print
the obit and fax it to you or mail it if you have the date of death, at
least they used to. The obit will tell you the funeral home and the funeral
home has a record of who paid the funeral expenses.
The Library genealogy department will send you pages from the Polk City
Directory if you have the address and you can see from her listing whether
she rented or owned the building and how her business was listed.
Then you should call the courthouse and found out how to get a copy of her
Will or Probate Records. I just thought of something else you could do- if
she were the legal guardian of her "orphans" there ought to be a number of
filings under her name in the Superior Court records of Allen County. Of
Course they will be Sealed, or should be, but you can at least get by the
record of filings a means to track her activities in Allen.

The quickest though most expensive way is to get the Abstract of Title
done on the property. This gives you the chain of title to the property,
owners names- everything you want to know. Could cost maybe $180.00
You can take the street address to the County Tax Assessor's Office and ask
them to give you the Legal Description for the property. There is probably
a computer there that will then let you enter the Legal and get a record of
who has paid taxes on the property. This would be VERY USEFUL to know,
particularly since the land is sitting idle! When you have dates of when
ownership changed hands, you can go to the County Recorder's Office and
look in the Deed Books for a copy of the Deeds which have names,
signatures, and attorney's names.
