STROKE IS FATAL
Mrs. Mary Elzey Passes Away Without Regaining Consciousness.
Paralytic Stroke
Death Came This Afternoon at Home of Brother, Benjamin Butler
Leaving Decatur last Tuesday afternoon for the home of her brother, Benjamin Butler,
north of the city, for a visit and in apparently the best of health, then being suddenly
stricken with paralysis Thursday afternoon, the many friends of Mrs. Mary Elzey could
scarcely believe the sad news that came this afternoon, that she had passed away at 12:30
o'clock today. She did not regain consciousness after being stricken, and was unable
to know her many loved ones who gathered around her. Her son, Forst Elzey of Third
street, this city, with whom she made her home; her daughter, Mrs. Will Shackley, of
Berne, were present, as was the daughter, Katie, wife of Charles Ulman of Moline, Ill.,
who arrived this morning in time to see her mother alive.
The attack was the first of its kind she had ever had and those who saw her only a few
days ago, jolly, good-natured as ever, and seemingly in the best of health, can scarcely
realize that she is dead.
Mrs. Elzey was the eldest of the children of the late Jesse Butler, and was sixty-two
years of age last January 24. A few weeks ago, at the Butler reunion, she was the
jolliest of the company, and took an active part in the festivities, giving the family
history. She was born in Whitley county, Indiana. The family later moved to Iowa, and in
1861 came to Indiana. Mrs. Elzey was the widow of Quillus Elzey, whose death occurred
twenty-six years ago. A son, Milo, is also deceased.
Besides the three children named before she leaves six brothers and one sister. They
are: Ex-Sheriff Albert Butler of Fort Wayne, Ben, Root township; Will and Sam, Decatur;
Harry E., Root township; Mel and Mrs. Perry Elzey, Decatur. A brother, John, is
deceased.
Mrs. Elzey was a very fine woman, of the highest Christian type, and was a faithful and
consistent member of the Methodist church of this city. She was also a member of the
Rebekah lodge, and well and favorably known. Her death causes much sadness, to hundreds
of friends.
