JESSE M. SERNA, SR.
Jesse M. Serna, Sr., 88, Decatur, died at 11:25 a.m. Friday at Adams County Memorial
Hospital's extended care unit. He had lived the past nine years in Decatur's
Lakeside Manor.
He was born on Oct. 5, 1902 in Musquies Coah, Mexico to Moses and Quadalupe Menchaca
Serna. He married Angelita Zavala, who died January 20, 1932. He later married Maria
Teran, who died February 22, 1965.
He was a retired construction worker and a former employee of the Duo Boat Co. in Decatur.
He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society.
Surviving are five sons, Jesse Z. Serna, 728 N. 2th [sic] St.; Jose Z. Serna, Crystal
City, Texas; Bob Serna, 937 Harrison St.; Louis T. Serna, 943 Harrison St.; and Hector T.
Serna, 935 Harrison St.; a stepson, Elias Caciano, 931 N. Fifth St.; six daughters, Mrs.
Benjamin (Martia) Ortiz, Lubbock, Texas; Flora Medellin, Waco, Texas; Mrs. Lewis (Maria)
Espinola, Lupe Garza and Mrs. Jose (Minnie) Montalvo, all of Fort Wayne, and Aurora Serna
of Warsaw; three brothers, David and Lupe Serna, both of Crystal City and Moses Serna,
Lyon, Ohio; a sister, Lupe Salazar, Decatur; 51 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren and
20 great-great-grandchildren.
Two sisters, three brothers, a stepson and several great grandchildren are deceased.
A prayer service will be held at 9:40 a.m. Monday in Zwick-Sefton and Jahn Funeral Home,
followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church,
Father Robert J. Dombrowski officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Visiting hours are 7-9 p.m. today and 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, with rosary services at
7:30 p.m. Sunday. Preferred memorials are to Lakeside Manor.
