THIRD CHILD IN W. STAHLY FAMILY DIES
Joel Edward Stahly, 6, Dies After 7-Week Illness
FUNERAL HELD THIS AFTERNOON
Joel Edward Stahly, six-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Stahly of Linn Grove, died
at the home of his parents early Saturday morning following a 7-weeks illness. The lad
had been in a serious condition for several weeks and then seemed to improve. His
condition became worse again last week and his strength ebbed slowly.
His death came rather unexpectedly, however. His nurse, Miss Catherine Colba, of
Geneva, had taken his temperature at 2 o'clock Saturday morning, and it was just 100.
At 4 o'clock Miss Colba found him dead. The child evidently died in his sleep,
sometime between 2 and 4 a.m. Saturday.
A post mortem was held Saturday and doctors announced following the post mortem that
death was caused by lynpho sarcoma of the liver.
Joel Edward Stahly was born in Hartford township, Jan. 10, 1930, bringing his age to 6
years, 3 months and 22 days. He was a son of Wilbert and Irene Striker Stahly. The
family moved to Linn Grove several years ago, Mr. Stahly being manager of the Linn Grove
Exchange of the Berne Equity Company.
This is the third death in the Stahly family. Two sisters, Lucille Esther and Mary
Catherine preceded, making the loss of the little boy unusually hard for the grief
stricken parents. Lucille died at the age of 3, and Mary at the age of 11 months.
Surviving are the parents, and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Striker, and Mr.
and Mrs. Ed Stahly.
The child was a member of the Cross Reformed church Sunday School here. The funeral
was held this afternoon at 1:30 at the home at Linn Grove and at 2 o'clock at the
Reformed church here, the Rev. Calvin Schmid officiating. Burial was in the MRE
Cemetery.
