There are papers that go back earlier than that, and they are available at
the Adams Public Library. Unfortunately, the collection is not complete. My
g-g-grandfather, John Singleton, died in Feb. 1888. There is no death
record. His tombstone is located at Alpha Cemetery. But there is no obit, as
the Decatur papers from that time frame (I don't know the exact dates, but
at least a year's worth, as I recall) were destroyed in a fire.

One would think that there might be an obituary in the newspaper files. Has
anyone ever found one?? I know the paper goes back as far as 1891, but am
not certain as to the beginning.
