Deceased Name: Clarence A. Stapleton
Clarence A. Stapleton, 88, of Decatur, died at 12:38 p.m. Monday in Adams Memorial
Hospital after an extended illness.
He married Eleanor L. Smith on November 15, 1947, in Woodburn, Indiana; she survives.
Clarence retired in 2004 from P& H Supply as a salesman and had also worked for Meyer
Plumbing and Haugk's Plumbing. He owned and operated Decatur Plumbing and Heating and
co-owned and operated Culligan Water with Rex Moore. He also was a salesman for Strickler
Trailer Sales in Decatur.
He served his country in the United States Army during World War II in Europe.
Clarence was a member of Decatur Church of God, where he had been chairman of the building
committee and a Sunday School teacher. He was a longtime active member of the church and
served on numerous boards.
He also was a member of American Legion Post 43 in Decatur and was a Class of 1939
graduate of Decatur High School.
Other survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Ed (Nancy A.) Steiner of Decatur; one brother,
Robert Stapleton of Tucson, Arizona; and one granddaughter, Mrs.
James (Christine) Cantwell of Bloomington, Indiana.
One son, Tony Wayne Stapleton, died on April 19, 1969.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Decatur Church of God, with burial
in Decatur Cemetery, including military graveside services by the color guard from
American Legion Post 43.
Visiting hours are 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday in Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, and
9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday in the church.
Preferred memorials are to the choir at Decatur Church of God.
