FORMER CITY OFFICIAL DIES
Joseph D. McFarland, Ex-City Treasurer, Found Dead In Bed
Joseph Daniel McFarland, age 53 years, former city treasurer, was found dead in bed at
his home, 903 West Monroe street, at 6:30 o'clock this morning. Death was due to
heart trouble and had occurred several hours before his lifeless body was discovered,
according to the opinion of the physician and undertaker.
Mr. McFarland appeared to be feeling well yesterday and last night, although he had
suffered from heart trouble for several years. He was reading when other members of his
family went to bed and it is not known exactly when he retired. When Mr. McFarland's
son, Gregg, arose this morning he was surprised to find that his father had not arisen, as
he was accustomed to arising first and calling other members of the household. Going to
his father's bedroom, Gregg found his lifeless body in bed. He was under the covers
and apparently had passed away while asleep.
Joseph Daniel McFarland, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Arch McFarland, was born in Jay county,
December 5, 1871. In June, 1899, he was married to Miss Ada Elzey, who died June 30,
1918. For many years Mr. McFarland was engaged in the barber business. In the city
election of November, 1913, Mr. McFarland was elected city treasurer and he filled the
office efficiently. He was re-elected in 1917, but resigned two years later to accept a
position as field manager for the White Mountain Dairy company, which position he held
until about three weeks ago.
Mr. McFarland was a member of the Knights of Pythias and Yeoman lodges in this city and
was a member of the Methodist Episcopalian church. He had lived in this city for the last
thirty years, coming here from Jay county. Surviving are one son, Gregg McFarland, who is
married and lived with his father; and the following brothers and sisters, John, Itha and
Mark McFarland, all of near Portland; Mrs. Clara Ferguson of Ridgeville, and Mrs. F. W.
Bennett, of San Piedro, California.
Funeral services will be held from the residence at 9:30 o'clock and from the First
Methodist church at 10 o'clock, Friday morning, the Rev. Fred F. Thornburg of the
Grace Methodist church in ????, and a former pastor of the local church, assisted by ???
S. A. Bridge, pastor of ??? church, officiating. Burial will be made in the Maplewood
cemetery.
