VERA OWENS
Vera Owens, 86, 322 N. Fifth St., a retired school teacher, active in church and social
circles for many years, and the wife of the first general foreman of the Decatur works of
the General Electric Co. - Russell Owens - died at 4:28 p.m. Monday in Lutheran Hospital,
Fort Wayne.
She had been in ill health 11 months and was transferred Monday to Lutheran Hospital
from Brighton Hall Nursing Home in New Haven; she died in the emergency room.
A well-known school teacher, Mrs. Owens was an educator from 1919 to 1962, instructing
students in the Berne area, the Hen Peck-Honduras area, at Manmouth school and Harrison
Hill in Fort Wayne.
She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of the
Order of Eastern Star Chapter 127, Pythian Sisters, Decatur Women Club, Church
Mother's Study Club, and organizer of a number of social clubs in Decatur. She also
was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Sorority.
The prominent local resident attended Madam Blakers College (later to be known as
Indiana State Teachers College), Indiana, Butler and Purdue Universities, plus St. Francis
and Tri-State Colleges, receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree and Master's Degree.
Born in Adams County on May 21, 1897, she was the daughter of John D. and Rosella
Sautbine-Stoutenberry, and was united in marriage on April 21, 1923 to Russell E. Owens.
Survivors, in addition to the husband, are one son, David A. Owens, Titusville, Fla.; a
brother, Marvin Stoutenberry, Decatur; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter. Two
brothers and one sister preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Zwick, Boltz &
Jahn Funeral Home, with Rev. Philip Hillsamer officiating. Burial will be in the Decatur
Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-5 and 7-9 Wednesday. Order of
Eastern Star Chapter 127 will hold services at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials are to the
First United Methodist Church.
