John F. Crist Dies After Heart Attack
Dies Fighting Fire At Home In Monroe
John Franklin Crist, 78, died of a heart attack at 7:15 a.m. today as he battled a fire
which threatened his home in Monroe.
A member of the Monroe volunteer fire department since its founding, he suffered a
fatal stroke when he got out of bed against doctor's orders to man a small fire
extinguisher.
Death occurred before the arrival of a physical. He had been ill six months and
bedfast for a week.
He was born in Washington township August 20, 1870, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eli Crist.
He had lived in Monroe for more than 50 years. He was the town electrician, a member of
the Modern Woodmen, the Loyal Order of the Moose and Monroe Methodist church.
Surviving are his wife, the former Hulda Jane Everhart; tow sons, Raymond and A. D.
Crist; a daughter, Mrs. Creo Myers, Fort Wayne; six grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs.
Hattie Andrews, Decatur. Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
The body will be removed from the Lobenstein funeral home, Friday evening at 6:30 and
may be viewed until the funeral, which is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the home and 2
o'clock at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon. The Rev. W. H. Hall will officiate.
Burial will be in the Pleasant Dale cemetery.
Monroe fire chief Chester Brodbeck said the fire began about the chimney in the middle
room of the house. He said Mr. Crist fought the flames single-handed before the arrival
of his son and volunteer firemen. Chief Brodbeck theorized that the "smothering
smoke and the fumes from the extinguisher" might have caused Mr. Crist's attack.
